I look forward to you adventure with the white dragon wyrm.

How will you publish it?
How long do you think it will take to get it to us? I do not mind a long wait I just like to have an expectation.

Are you in the central ohio area?
If so I would love to join you for a game.
Do you play or run in play by post?

Do you play PFS?
Do you go to Origins?

What generation are you a part of? Do you fit the profile for that generation at all?

Do you have blog?

Do you have any full adventures written up in form that is sharable with the general public?

What house rules to you use?

Ever play red box DnD (pre first ed)?

To be honest I had completely forgotten about it. Sometimes I need reminding about spur of the moment ideas. :P

Amazing Song Lyrics? :3

This will be the day from RWBY. "We are lightning straying from the thunder" gives me chills every time.

What do you think of a Life Leech Sadist Vitalist? Effective? Thematically awesome? Limitations?

Well since it's a gestalt arcanist/vitalist, I think you'd have to be actively trying to be bad to not be effective. And yes it does seem thematically awesome. :D

Reminds me slightly of my vampire (an extremely toned down version compared to the core vampire) lifeleech vitalist. :)

What is your favorite snackfood?

It varies. Lately I've been pretty addicted to chips & salsa, but I have a super weakness for Little Debbie "Nutty Bars" (which actually don't have nuts, they're peanut butter/chocolate wafers).

Quote:
What is your favorite class?

Pretty sure psion by a thin margin. I like most of the core classes + psionics classes a ton, but I tend to find myself playing psions the most.

Quote:
What is your least favorite class?

Oracle due to forced fluff making it hard to make unique characters. Closely followed by Fighter and Gunslinger (though I like gunslingers thematically so I made my own).

Quote:
What is your favorite race?

That's a tough one. The campaign that I run has a little more than 20 racial options that are considered normal for the campaign (including drider). I tend to play humans more often than not though, so I might default to human. I'm not 100% sure though. :o

Hmmm. Pathfinder changelings. I prefer the shapeshifting ones.

What is your favorite class to be playing as a Goblin?

If the GM allows animal companions from the bestiary for Rangers, goblin rangers riding on giant bats are really cool. That said, goblin-izing most any class can make it fun. A goblin wizard with a spellbook of finger paintings and weird bone fetishes and jewelry and such would be super awesome too. :D

Wraithstrike wrote:

What is your typing speed? You write long posts.

I am only clocking in at about 35wpm if I correct mistakes as I go.

I dunno, it depends on how in the zone I am. I've never tested my typing speed but I used to play a game where I'd try to type words to a song as fast as they were being sung (can't realistically keep up with it though :P). I've got a novel I started writing back in November. I wrote about 15,000 words (it's actually only 14,725 words) in about 2 days. I really need to go back and finish it because I was having fun with it.

Nice response to my questions, it really puts into perspective the way you think about the game and why you do things your way.

For me it's different. I look at the published material and come up with interesting ways to use it in the game world to make the setting richer. (similar to what you describe about your necromancey etc.)

I don't tend to ban too much in my games, but when something is potentially unbalancing, I make the choice to use it very tough to make. Risk vs Reward are strong balancing incentives in my games.

It also explains why my posts tend to disagree with yours more often than not I think, at least when we do post in the same threads.

Cheers, and good luck with this thread, seems many folk appreciate your input.

Thanks. It's good to remember that there's no wrong way to eat a Reese's. :)

In pdf form. Aratrok thinks I should publish it as an adventure on the Paizo store. I'd like to do that but I also want to give it out for free too, as a gift. Maybe I'll figure out some way to do both (or just put it on the Paizo store AND give it out for free so that people can buy it officially if they want to).

Quote:

Depends on my work schedule. My manager appreciates my reliability so as a result I tend to get called in to fill gaps with stuff comes up. As it turns out, I had to go in early today because a co-worker is sick and may be sick for a few days and I learned today that another staff member quit, so my schedule for next week is going to be pretty tight.

I'm probably going to try to spend most of Thursday writing it though, so if all goes well, sometime between a week from now and a month from now?

Quote:

Nope. I live in NC, but my work scheduling has made game scheduling difficult. I mostly play with my west-coast friends via MapTools these days (I frequently work 2nd and 3rd shifts so our games tend to be really late).

Quote:

I used to when I was about 13-15 or so. I'd dare say that's where I cut my teeth with descriptive writing. I mostly do MapTools games these days and used to frequently run stuff on OpenRPG back before my time was devoured by real life. :P

Nope. I don't think there's a local PFS nearby. I live in the boonies. :P

Uhh, I was born in 1987, grew up as a 90s kid, and I'm not sure what the profile for most generations are. :o

Speaking of generations, I used to play with a 60 year old lady in online PBP games when I was a kid. She hadn't been playing RPGs long but really loved it, so you never know who's going to break the mold. :)

Quote:
Do you have blog?

I sure do. It's AlvenaPublishing.blogspot.com, though I'm very sloth-like when it comes to updating it. Getting pestered to update has spurred me on in the past though, or if I have a particular subject to talk about.

Quote:

Well I did test the waters a couple years back with this adventure on the Paizo store. It's got mixed reviews but Grimmy seemed to get exactly what I was going for when I wrote it. Sadly, Mr. Endzeitgeist found it to be perhaps the worst thing since bed lice, so your mileage may vary?

Quote:
What house rules to you use?

My preferred game setup looks like this.

  • 15 Point Buy
  • 1.5 HD at 1st level (so a d6 = 9, d8 = 12, d10 = 15, d12 = 18), average thereafter. This cuts down on the rocket-tag nature of 1st level
  • Player characters receive the Heroic Surge feat from the d20 modern SRD as a bonus feat. This is my version of hero points
    Heroic Surge Pathfinderized:
    Heroic Surge
Benefit: The character may take an extra move action or standard action in a round, either before or after the character's regular actions. The character may use Heroic Surge a number of times per day depending on his or her character level (as shown below), but never more than once per round.

    Character Level Times per Day
    1st-4th = 1
    5th-8th = 2
    9th-12th = 3
    13th-16th = 4
    17th-20th = 5

  • Healing spells are moved to Necromancy school (instead of conjuration) and the subtypes [positive] (replacing the healing subschool) and [negative] (for appropriate spells) being added to the appropriate spells. I'm a little OCD and this feels more elegant
  • 3.0 Weapon Size rules. Bilbo can wield Sting without a -2 penalty

Any additional house rules vary from campaign to campaign depending on what the group wants.

    Quote:

Nope, but I've wanted to give OSRIC a go just to try it once. :)

On DrivethruRPG (but not Paizo.com) you can price it as "pay what you want": free, but people can pay a higher price if they want. If you want to be able to give it away for free, that's what I'd recommend.

She was quite the oddity I'd say. This was back in the really early 2000s when I used to do a lot of PBP games at Nexuscity.net. On the outside she looked pretty much like your typical grandma, however she had a very unique love for life and discovering new and interesting things.

She was engaged to a fellow in his thirties (who was madly in love with her I might add) who was also a gamer and rode four-wheelers on the weekends. She loved the anime Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe (yay Ryoko!) and found it marvelously hilarious.

Unfortunately she passed away some years back but the experience will forever be with me and I'll gladly tell anyone and everyone who you can be young forever. :)

You meet some interesting people through online gaming. I used to know a professional dominatrix as well, which isn't a common profession AFAIK. We had some interesting out of game conversations about that, especially since I was only 14 or so at the time, but I'd dare say some of the conversations with the 60yo lady were often spicier. :P

I think sanity systems can be cool when used right, and taint systems. You just gotta make sure it's not too invasive and/or account for the fact PCs are pretty supernatural in their own right. :)

Yes. I've got a cat named "D" whose mom died before it could open its eyes so I bottle-fed it. Also another cat named Jojo, and a cat who ended up with us when her family had to move named Sydney (she suffers from mental issues, but she's making good progress). Unfortunately our oldest cat, Nosy, died this last year shortly after my mom. He was a little more than 10 years old.

EDIT: My sister has a pair of chihuahuas that I tend to get along with. One of them was rescued from a shelter and has some serious emotional / mental hangups (hates men as a rule for some reason. I think there was probably a guy who was mean to him), but we get along well enough that he's the first to meet me at the door whenever I get home from work.

Are you a boy or a girl?
Darkest dungeon is a 2D dungeon crawler about a group of heroes who are hired to go clean out the old estate belonging to you. The heroes become stressed while adventuring, suffer from mental disorders and can gain them from certain experiences (getting locked in an iron maiden will make them claustrophobic). The only way to reduce stress is by sending them to the church to meditate/flagellate/pray or the bar to drink/gamble/go to a brothel

I am going to add in the mental stress system as more of a progression of power. for example, a first level fighter would have little to no experience with monsters, but a level ten bard would have quite a lot of experience with the supernatural and would suffer nearly nothing from monsters.

Martial classes are middle of the road for sanity affects, religous are less affected and arcane are the most affected.

Seems cool. Wouldn't that mean sorcerers are really prone to breakdowns? Also, not taking a poke at religion or anything, but wizards always seemed more logical and reasoned to me while combining that with a working knowledge of the supernatural, while faith based mindsets usually tend to be really superstitious and such; so ever consider flipping them around?

    Liberty's Edge

Well, a cleric or a religous person knows that yes, there is something out there, but its not all evil and there is a reward at the end, while a wizard would be too focused on reading through his books, finding new tidbits of lore and generally being more concerned with exploring the arcane.

There are exceptions, a sorcerer who has a bloodline tied to the outer planes would know better and so would a native outsider, dhampir or changeling, monks would also suffer nearly nothing once they get still mind, a fighters bravery would help against such effects.

the classes coming out of the occult adventures playtest are varied, the medium would be completely immune to such attacks, a psychic would be able to shrug off the affects easily, a mesmerist could just refocus himself, the spiritualist would have basic experience with the dead.

Thus leading to bizzare situations that lead to explosions.

Also, the player who needed help is now a swashbuckler, his name is ashiel.

Have different abilities that you conduct as standard, move, swift, immediate, and full-round actions that adjust the conditions of you, your allies, your enemies, and the environment. Generally speaking you'll have at least three in-class options to do every round. You have a class feature that ends silence effects with a resounding crescendo and you get a special bonus when you do so (for the epic breakdown you just unleashed).

You play much like a full-caster in form and function (cruddy direct combat ability) except instead of spells you conduct pieces. The complexity of the piece (how many effects you can tie into a single piece to maintain) increases with your level and lasts as long as you can maintain it, essentially being effects with durations of concentration that continue to repeat round after round. An example of a piece constructed might be something like this.

March of the Firebrand (Su) (You named this as it's actually 3 different notes combined), summons 1 large fire elemental as a summon monster while the piece is active, all allies within 100 ft. deal an additional +1d6 fire damage with their melee attacks while the piece is active, all allies within 100 ft. act as if under the effects of freedom of movement while the piece is active.

Each piece is limited by its complexity and notes. Higher level notes require more complexity. If you can conduct a complexity 7 song you could combine any combination between seven 1st level notes and 1 7th level note. Unlike expending spell slots, your pieces are simply active when you decide to begin conducting (though some may have drawbacks for extended usage).

Your choirs are fluffable as to what sort they are. Be it an angelic host or a rowdy demon horde or the very elements themselves playing music to the sound of whistling winds, cascading rain, the roaring of the flame, or the drumming of shifting plates. Or something like a ghost orchestra or your character's former troupe who all died in a horrible accident but who demanded that the "show must go on" even after their deaths.

If you have one or more bards in the party you may form a troupe which allows you to extend your pieces to the bards who may then use them as bardic performances if they expend 2 rounds of bardic performance for every 1 complexity that they wish to perform and maintain each round. Unlike yourself, your gifted bards can maintain these pieces without using a standard action (just as when using a bardic performance), being only limited by how many rounds worth of performance they can sustain.

How would you GM a low magic or low fantasy campaign?

Depends on how low-magic it was going to be. A lot of people have different ideas on what a low-magic campaign is supposed to be or look like. Depending on what scale of low magic I was going for, it would range anywhere from using the low-fantasy settings in the core rules, to applying a negative modifier to the effective size of settlements for the purposes of magic item and spellcasting service availability (depending on how common I wanted casters to be in the setting beyond the PCs) to possibly changing which classes are available for the game.

I actually used a rather odd pseudo-low-magic setup in a mini-campaign I was running recently wherein magic users were fairly uncommon but the process of creating magical items was not. Merely having ranks in Spellcraft allowed you to attempt to create magic items regardless of class. Treasure was not an emphasis in the campaign at all, so I threw together a small system where various ingredients served to act as the materials used in item creation and made some adjustments so that various skills could be used to gather them.

The game assumed the majority of people were very low level and involved things like investigating werewolves in a small town, solving strange murders, or dealing with mad pseudo-science, all while having some sort of strange tie-in with the occult (one PC had a strange evil mark on them from birth, another was digging up forbidden secrets of magic to seek a cure for death, and the third had a dark secret that stems back to a traumatic experience in her childhood).

I've also considered using the ascetic rules I threw together as a gift for Mikaze to run a more cinematic campaign with a final fantasty-style system where instead of magic items you instead get ascetic points and just do away with treasure in the most part.

In an extremely low-fantasy environment I might just make NPC classes the standard which gives a pretty old school feeling to the game I've found.

Do you think "the Christmas tree effect" is bad, and if so, what would you do to alter it?

Not really. There's a certain value to both experience points and "epic loots". It can be really fun to improve your character with stuff. It's another sort of reward, and if you're crafting yourself, another way of customizing your character.

However, if someone wasn't as interested in the bookkeeping side of things you could consolidate effects into single magic items, so instead of having 12 magic items that each did a single thing you might instead have 3 magic items that did four things.

That said, the "christmas tree effect" is actually part of the "wow" factor of being super successful as an adventurer and reaching a high level. When someone casts detect magic on you and yours and even your toothbrust lights up like a small star, you can feel pretty badass because you either amassed all of these extraordinary wonders through your grand adventures or they stand as a testament to your extraordinary skill in weaving magic into items, or both.

Generally speaking, I would be pretty disappointed if I reached a high level and didn't even have some sweet magic shwag to show for it. Given that the quintessential motivation for adventuring as a profession is the acquisition of loot (even in the Hobbit, humorously enough, Bilbo's family is more affluent because his mother was an adventurer. This made me smile when I was reading the book for the first time after having been playing D&D beforehand).

However, most of all, no matter what the GM does I just want them to be consistent as much as possible. I don't want to hear a GM tell me that I can't buy magic items in towns but then find them raining from the sky in adventures. Doubly so if magic is prevalent in the world. It's just too jarring to my sense of verisimilitude because of the nature of human beings and supply and demand. Everything has a price.

    Huh, sure.

    1) How long have you been GMing?

    2) What's the sources for the marilith and balor pictures from your rewrite?

The rewrites are pretty nice - I've field tested your marilith rewrite, and honestly, greater magic weapon and quickened divine power in of themselves make an enormous difference.

    3) As to the balor rewrite - I'd be very tempted to drop the unholy sword ability and instead buff up Infuse Weapons to be more like what magi do - having the balor add up to 6 plusses worth of enhancement bonus and/or abilities to any weapon its holding - so adding stuff Could be redundant with greater magic weapon, except greater magic weapon doesn't help with materials-based DR.

If the ability was set up that way, what action type would you make it for the balor to swap the plusses around? Standard? Swift? I'm thinking swift.

On-the-fly brilliant energy/bane/speed/whatever would be pretty strong, but those are all things a 17th level magus with the right arcanas can do as a swift action.

Here is a link to the thread where you posted those.

Whoa! Lots of stuff going on in that thread!

    One more question:
Was your first tabletop RPG experience AD&D, some later version of D&D, or some other system?

I've been GMing some form of the d20 system for 16 years. Roughly 95% of the time I've been involved has been GMing related.

Some really awesome artists on Deviantart IIRC. I had them bookmarked on my other PC which I need to do some work on because last I tried to boot it up it had mysteriously decided that booting windows was for quitters.

That could be really cool. As to the action, I think it might depend on the duration of the effect. Being able to casually swap to brilliant energy [you] bane weapons on demand would be reaaaaally scary. >_>

I would cautiously point out that a balor also has a leg up in raw statistics by comparison to the magus (d10 HD, full BAB, 2 good saves, 6+Int mod sills) and the one I wrote has some really nice SLAs and/or options, so he might not need anything quite so awesome. :P

But you could always try it, and it might be a cool feature for a balor lord as well. ^_^

    Hey Ashiel! *waves*

What was the most fun you've ever had in a game?

Oh that's a really hard one. I'd probably have to say this one time when I was GMing, our party was 20th level and was facing off against the big bad (a major demon lord that the Arcane Brotherhood in Faerun was attempting to call into the world). It was a custom critter and was really, really tough.

The party which consisted of a hobgoblin warblade, a kobold lich sorcerer, a tiefling malconvoker, a human abjurer, and a halfling priest of Ilmater, were doing all they could to fight the creature, but between its HP, regeneration, saves, SR, quickened spells, and generally being a major badass, it wasn't working out so well. At this moment the halfling remembered a +2 lifedrinker they found in a dungeon a few sessions prior (as filler loot) that they kept 'cause they thought it was interesting.

The halfling grabs it out of their bag of holding and runs over and gives it to the warblade and cast death ward on him. The warblade and the kobold sorcerer (polymorphed into a dragon) are holding the line and fighting with the demon while the healer is spamming heal / mass heal / holy word (to sweep the fiend's adds), and the malconvoker is supporting the group with meat shields and buffs, while the abjurer was dispelling and/or removing bad things the demon was using.

The healer was like "I'm running out of heals" the summoned minions all began using aid-another on the warblade who super-full-attacked the fiend and inflicted like 14 negative levels on him (his SR was tied to his HD) and then the malconvoker cast flesh to stone on him, the abjurer maximized acid fireball, the sorcerer disintegrate, and the healer banishment and sent the fiend home in less than a matchbox.

The Great Lord Ashiel's favorite encounter in glorious detail!

I might rewrite it from scratch as a proper manual rather than the collection of bits of random tips & tricks, with a bit more organization and themes to the sections. Maybe something like sections for...

    Equipment & Gear
    Character Building / Benchmarks
    Character Development / Roleplaying
    Adventuring / Exploration
