I've been getting some PMs a lot lately with different questions and commentary, and a few people suggested to me that I make a thread to answer questions about anything (like my take on Pathfinder stuff, advice, favorite ice cream, whatever).

So taking their suggestions, here is that thread. Enjoy. J<(^-^)>|=

What's your most sage advice for a GM running an AP for the first time?

Also, what is the ideal pizza?

What is the worst AP in theory? What is the worst AP in practice?

So in our current home game I am playing a Samsaran Lore oracle (seer) with maxed INT and CHA, the INT being for skill points.
I have gone all skills and divinations.
However the ONLY combat spells I have taken are defences so as to stay a total non combatant. (Mirror Image, Invis, Sanctuary, Stone shield etc.)

What is your take on the viability of a character that is amazing out of combat with social skills/spells, divinations and is "yes I know that too" guy, but brings nothing to the table in combat?

How combat heavy is your GM? At my table, there's maybe one combat encounter a session, the rest mostly being social encounters, adventure and RP.

Don't read it as you go. An easy mistake to make when starting with premade adventures is running it page to page.

Getting a good idea of what's going to be in the portions you're going to be covering is a good idea. :)

I can't say for sure as I haven't played in or GM'd all of them (few of them, in truth). That said I was a player in Reign of Winter and the GM and I frequently discussed a lot of errors and such, and the AP felt really strained after the first book (really enjoyed the first book though) and we ended up abandoning it because it just wasn't doing it for us.

I really enjoy Curse of the Crimson Throne though, and I was playing in a fun Rise of the Runelords game 'till my friend running it got deployed.

Game is about 25% combat (ish) in an 8 hour session we have 1 or maybe 2 combats, past that its RP and intrigue.

While I personally like to be pretty well rounded it can have its place if you're really good at a certain thing that helps the whole group. If your GM doesn't constantly stomp on your divinations, your contribution to combat probably comes in foreknowledge. Push come to shove, you could always use some consumables when the chips are down. :o

It depends on the game really. We sometimes have sessions that go by with no combat at all, while other times we have a series of lots of combats, and stuff in between, depending on the needs of the environment/story. :)

Do you play with 3 pp materials in your games? What are some of your favorites?

You once did your "Paladin hell" scenario to explain the benefits of the Paladin class vs. the Fighter in a scenario where things were stacked against the Paladin; have you created any other such scenarios that showed surprising or against common perception results?

Dreamscarred Publishing's Psionics. It's just freaking amazing! I also write additional material when something isn't well represented. My brother really loves my gunslinger and monk rewrites (and he likes monks with guns).

Uhhh, probably. I'd need to do some digging to find them though. Those things are fun though because I like coming up with adventuring scenarios so it's kind of a win/win.

Nothing will absolve you from the abomination that is adding honey and pineapples to pizza. NOTHING!

Oh that's a really hard one. I'd probably have to say this one time when I was GMing, our party was 20th level and was facing off against the big bad (a major demon lord that the Arcane Brotherhood in Faerun was attempting to call into the world). It was a custom critter and was really, really tough.

The party which consisted of a hobgoblin warblade, a kobold lich sorcerer, a tiefling malconvoker, a human abjurer, and a halfling priest of Ilmater, were doing all they could to fight the creature, but between its HP, regeneration, saves, SR, quickened spells, and generally being a major badass, it wasn't working out so well. At this moment the halfling remembered a +2 lifedrinker they found in a dungeon a few sessions prior (as filler loot) that they kept 'cause they thought it was interesting.

The halfling grabs it out of their bag of holding and runs over and gives it to the warblade and cast death ward on him. The warblade and the kobold sorcerer (polymorphed into a dragon) are holding the line and fighting with the demon while the healer is spamming heal / mass heal / holy word (to sweep the fiend's adds), and the malconvoker is supporting the group with meat shields and buffs, while the abjurer was dispelling and/or removing bad things the demon was using.

The healer was like "I'm running out of heals" the summoned minions all began using aid-another on the warblade who super-full-attacked the fiend and inflicted like 14 negative levels on him (his SR was tied to his HD) and then the malconvoker cast flesh to stone on him, the abjurer maximized acid fireball, the sorcerer disintegrate, and the healer banishment and sent the fiend home in less than a matchbox.

That's a hard question. My personal favorite is probably the Psion because I like how many different ways I can flavor magic with it.

Perhaps surprisingly, my least favorite isn't fighter or rogue (or summoner) but probably the oracle. Not because it's not a good class but because I'm not a fan of forced-fluff and every time I sat down to make an oracle (as a PC or NPC) I find myself having to revise story-elements to fit a handful of specific curses. EDIT: I feel it's sad that a base class has such specific character elements hard-coded.

As a result I allow players who want to play oracles in my games drop oracle curses if desired.

Artemis and I are about to start up a 2-person party gestalt-game in Emerald Spire. I'm thinking of playing a steam-punk Strix with a custom built shoulder mounted siege cannon as a Grenadier Alchemist/Gunslinger.

Any problems I should expect? Artemis is going to let me 'tinker' to improve the cannon too, any suggestions on how to improve the cannon? I've only got the idea to launch my alchemist bombs out of it so far.

Current build (according to Artemis, who designed it): Standard action reload, utilizing "paper cartridge" drops it to move; -2 attack penalty; 3d10 B&P damage; 100 range increment. Currently muzzle loaded, eventual 'tinkering' makes it cartridge loaded via advanced firearm rules (whenever he say so, he says).

Example for general power level if this game: "Rule of Cool is king!". He's playing a half-umbral dragon merfolk (strong tail trait) twilight sage arcanist. Still hasn't figured out the other half of his gestalt. 1 feat every level, 4d6 no drop assign where you want. I decided to trade my template for my cannon.

The Exchange

how often do you use "fluff" (as described by many) to help balance the game?

Do you think mechanics should be the only way to balance a game or do in game reality work in campaigns to reign in the more obvious overpowered aspects of Pathfinder as it stands now?

Because I've only ever seen them when people linked to them, so I wasn't sure what board they were on (and the Paizo forums layout is horrible).

Quote:

Pretty much never. IMHO, good mechanics should be pretty setting-neutral.

That said, fluff can affect the balance of a game. For example, in my campaign setting that I usually GM, most people don't like necromancy or any spells dealing with infernal powers, or anything seen as "black magic", and in one major country where a lot of my games take place in, such things are illegal. Which means that there is a setting-specific drawback to things like animate dead, imp familiars, or fiendish sorcerers (but it can be fun to play with things considered fringe by society).

This isn't to reign in anything so much as it is to provide a lifelike backdrop and actually stands to serve players rather than punishing them (because it gives them a way for their characters who are outcasts of the law/society to stand out, hide their abilities until the right time, and make interesting choices about when and why to use their power).

It also makes playing anti-heroes a lot more fun. And opens up opportunities for players to have moments like this: Zuko vs Earthbenders.

Quote:

My personal preference is yes, mechanics should at least be the primary way to balance something. I won't say it's the only way though (for example, artifacts in the game are theoretically balanced by their difficulty to find which is entirely in the realm of the GM and the campaign).

At 3d10 base damage, you might consider the Vital Strike line of feats for 6d10, 9d10, and 12d10 damage as you feat-up. It would allow you to make one "big" attack at a time using your highest BAB, and would allow you to shoot, reload, shoot. Damage would be pretty swingy though. :P

If you could launch alchemist bombs from it that could be epic, especially with some of the bomb mods (like sticky/cloud bombs and such).

Vitalists are reeeeaaally cool, so that sounds really fun. Since your game is gestalt you could combo it with something like antipaladin and make a death knight-style character.

I'm seriously jonesing on the Twilight Sage Arcanist. Stacking that with the Vitalist sounds badass in the form of "lord of life and death" kind of thing. Half-umbral dragon merfolk is just icing on the cake xD. Just wanted to avoid Vitalist since I'm still not 100% familiar with it, and totally new on the Arcanist (outside of theorycraft).

A more serious answer than my previous one (but more philosophical so I apologize :P). I'm physically male and that's pretty much how people I know in my day to day life know me (though if I had the option, things might be different).

That aside, someone once asked why I don't mind/correct people using different gendered pronouns when referring to me during discussions on the forums. The reason is because it doesn't matter. Someone's physical body doesn't change the value of their thoughts. It doesn't matter if any poster here is male, female, or otherwise, because we're all just minds. As a result it doesn't bother me in the slightest which pronoun is used. In most cases people will choose the one that feels most comfortable to them or based on however their minds perceive me in their mind's eye.

As for my avatar, I like Seoni. She's cool and I always liked that pic of her. :)

Nice response to my questions, it really puts into perspective the way you think about the game and why you do things your way.

For me it's different. I look at the published material and come up with interesting ways to use it in the game world to make the setting richer. (similar to what you describe about your necromancey etc.)

I don't tend to ban too much in my games, but when something is potentially unbalancing, I make the choice to use it very tough to make. Risk vs Reward are strong balancing incentives in my games.

It also explains why my posts tend to disagree with yours more often than not I think, at least when we do post in the same threads.

Cheers, and good luck with this thread, seems many folk appreciate your input.
