Cantrips for all.

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Dark Archive

It is trivially easy for any 1st level PC to have unlimited Cantrips or Orisons.

It makes a vast difference to the game on a practical level. A 1st level Arcane caster need never worry about washing with Prestidigitation, a 1st level Divine caster with Create Water makes long distance travel tolerable and does odd things in the 3.5 designed Legacy of Fire.

Magic is sufficiently prevalent on Golarion - how much difference would it make if everyone had a little?

3/day, like the Trait (I forget the name). A Commoner with Purify Food and Water 3/day makes an excellent taster for a noble. Arcane Mark for scribes and business secretaries. Ghost Sound for theatre actors. Know Direction for guides.

So... What's the discussion about?

The noble doesn't need the commoner, he has cantrips too, yeah? :P

This reminds me slightly of a civilization in my campaign world. Said civilization basically has the commoner class replaced with adept, and most every citizen has some level of magical training (even if it's just how to operate spell-trigger items).

On a side note, the most common spells prepared amongst said civilization are in fact prestidigitation, purify food and drink, create water, mending, and endure elements.

Sort of has a Harry Potter sound to it. Everyone has their own special spell.

I could imagine a town where every family knows their own Cantrip. Maybe it's two because of marriage.

Maybe the better off families had an Uncle who was a sorcerer and as a result passed down a few better spells.

Scarab Sages

Not personally a fan of it but then I prefer my magic to be a bit harder to get ahold of. That said I do recall a 3.X product that listed different background magic levels from anti-magic (dead magic meant sorcerers and other inherent magical beings could still cast as they were using internal power so anti-magic which opposed it was the lowest category) where no magic could exist up to high magic where everyone had at will cantrips and wizards drawing on magical energies got their spells automatically maximised or extended at no cost, chosen at 1st level can't be changed (internal casters e.g. Sorcerers didn't as again they were using internal energies rather than background magic).
