My girlfriend and I beat this scenario today and I was just wondering if someone could run through how exactly splitting up the checks to defeat monsters go, particularly villains.
For example we were both at the same location and I encountered BARL... first and foremost I need to take on one of the checks correct? But does it matter which one?
BARL BREAKBONES : Check to defeat: Combat 17 or Fortitude 12 THEN Combat 21
Lets assume I want to do Combat 17 and then she wants to do Combat 21, if either of us fail is he totally undefeated?
I just need a little guidance on splitting up checks for cards that have THEN text.
Thanks for reading, the community you all have fostered is amazing, I love the way I have been treated with all the questions I have asked and all the messageboards I have read over all seem so kind and helpful. Thanks Everyone!

Note also that you have to do the two checks. Even if you fail the first one and know that the bane won't be defeated, you cannot quit. The bad guy is still there and may do additional damage. It may happen that you decide to change who takes the second check after failing the first one (providing whoever's turn it is took the first one) - for example if you lost all your cards for damage on the first check, you may as well take the second since you have nothing left to lose.

I see how this makes sense in Frencois' example, but I just want to reiterate what jones said: if there is more than one character at the location, the character who encountered the card does not have to take the first check. That character does have to take at least one of the checks, however.
