Breath of Life - Dying

Rules Questions

Breath of Life (Cl 5) says: "If cast upon a creature that has died within 1 round, apply the healing from this spell to the creature. If the healed creature's hit point total is at a negative amount less than its Constitution score, it comes back to life..."

How is that different from any other spell?

I'm not sure what part you are not understanding?

When you drop to below your Con score in negative HP, you die. So, if you have a Con score of 14, everything between -1hp and -13 means you are unconscious and bleeding out. At -14 you are dead. While you are dying, but not actually dead, you roll a check each round or loose 1 more HP.

Normally, any and all healing done to a dead character does nothing. Healing spells (like Cure Wounds) will not bring them back to life.

Raise Dead and the higher level Rez spells will, but they are costly and take a long time to cast.

Breath of Life walks the middle ground, allowing you to bring a Dead Character back to life after they have died, as long as it's within 1 round. It's not costly, and it only works if the Healing portion of the spell would actually heal them enough for them to be alive.

Does that help?

I think you're missing that the " If the healed creature's hit point total is at a negative amount less than its Constitution score, it comes back to life..." line applies to the target AFTER the spell.

So, if your friend has 14 Constitution, but took damage that dropped him to -25 HP, he's dead. If you cast Cure Serious Wounds and heal 30 HP, nothing happens. He's dead, doesn't matter what you do now. If you cast Breath of Life, however and heal 30 HP, he gets up again, since he'd be a 5 HP.

Oh, thanks. I missed the after the spell part.
