In a game I was in, I was given license to play the Bladebownd Magus' sword. The flavor we came up for the weapon was that it was a sacred blade of Iomedae that had been waiting centuries for the one destined to be its wielder.
When the Magus asked the sword what it would do should he die, the sword said it wanted to lay with him in eternal rest and accept no other wielder. ( The sword would speak with none but its wielder, and refuse to reveal its powers. ) In Iomedae's faith, a sword is never buried with its owner because it is seen as a waste of a serviceable tool. The exception is when a sword is especially treasured, or otherwise important to the person using it. I couldn't think of a better case than that for it to just rest in peace with him.
I say go with the swords personality, or fluff.

This raises the question as to whether OP wants to know what the rules say about what happens to the sword, or whether he wants advice on what should happen to it.
If he wants advice then this should be moved to the advice forum.
