So aside from the current loophole of newbie goblin farming...

Where does better loot drop?

Is is purely based on the type of hex (Wilderness, Badlands, Monster) or is there a function of closeness to settlements as well?

Goblin Squad Member

Seems to be based more on level of mob you kill.

...possibly modified by your character's trained knowledge... it is supposed to be so modified but there are questions lurking in the underbrush whether it be so.

The loot doesn't get a whole lot better. Nothing from T2 is supposed to drop, that all has to be made by players. You need to harvest some stuff, get some crafting skills, and make it. Or co-operate with someone else and get them the goods so they can make it for you.

So that changes the question a bit.

Where do you find a higher concentration of "high level" creatures?

Is level purely the color (white, yellow, orange ...) or is there levels within a color band (a Wolf higher level than an Omega Wolf)?

Or, if it gets fixed and people start using it, buy better gear on the AH. (So far, I've seen raw and salvaged materials on the auction houses, but very few finished goods.)

To be fair, loot in this game is kind of a loose concept.

My primary interest is Recipes, Spells/Maneuvers, and resources.

For the first two, I know that knowledge skills help after the base level of the mob.

From what I have read, getting higher level resources is a function of your harvesting level, but are resource nodes "better" farther out in the wilderness? Does trash heap in a Wilderness Forest Hex has the same loot table regardless of location of that Hex?

I believe something was said that escalations can influence the things you will find in nodes?

There was a fairly consistent element of the developers' conversations (and consequently ours) that rare resources/etc. would be most difficult to gain. My sense of that was that there would be geographical differences, but there was also something of a suggestion that advanced escalations might be key. Whether any of that was more durably framed than speculative is questionable I feel certain none of it was carved in stone.

Gathering nodes vary by hex type, region, and even monster hex or monster home hex to some degree. Drops vary by type of monster to some degree and are supposed to be effected by knowledge skills, but the only drops you will get are salvage, starter gear, and recipes (the important one).

Killing high level mobs won't start netting you +2 swords or anything, but you may get better salvage and recipes.

The mob colors are a level indicator - pure level, not related to the character's 'level'. I believe white is level 1 and 2, yellow is level 3 and 4, and it goes up from there. For different mob types there is a progression. So Omega Wolves (1) and Wolves (2) are both white-named, and Alpha Wolves (3) are yellow-named. iirc, Wargs are also yellow named. Note that many escalation mobs seemed renamed normal mobs. So Broken Warriors die a lot like Bandit Recruits.

If you want higher concentrations of non-escalation mobs, Ogres (yellow and up) can often be found; a lot of mountain hexes seem half Ogres.

Higher level mobs can drop T2 tokens, T2 salvageables, T2 recipes... they just won't drop finished gear.

The area along the "patrolled" roads and surrounding the starter settlements is "safer" you need to move away from the NPC settlements and facilities to find the strongest threats.

There is a table of values on the wiki at: PFO online wiki: Mob Level Values

No. Resources in a hex are deliberately intended to drive players away from the NPC zones. The best quality/quantity resources are in the deep wilderness. The very best are in (not yet implemented) gushers, which will require teams and player made equipment to exploit effectively.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

*Sigh* Second day of EE, what do I get when I get in a group of six to fight an escalation? Comfortable Shoes recipe, that's what I get!

And what does it take to make comfortable shoes in PFO, you ask, since all your shoes are too tight and pinchy and cause blisters as you run around? An tailor of 9, that's what!

Good thing I plan on my DT to work on Tailor, but probably be summer before I get around to getting it up that high!!!!! :-)

Nice to have a long range goal though.
