I am bit Confused on on the difference of Steps and Checks.

Particularly when it goes from describing one to another. Examples

Skull & Shackles Rulebook pg 9 wrote:
specific card’s power may only be used once per check or step.
Skull & Shackles Rulebook pg 10 wrote:
You may not reveal the same card for its power more than once per check or step.

And there are a few others...

What Exactly is the definition of a Step?

And it seems that there can be multiple checks in a Step, or is each check considered a step on it's own?

For example if I need to make 2 checks to defeat a Monster does each check count as a step so I can use the same type of card or a power for both checks?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Step" is used for the parts of a turn, and for the parts of an encounter. The parts of a check are NOT steps.

S&S Rulebook p8 wrote:

Your Turn

Take your turn by going through the following steps in order. The only required steps are Advance the Blessings Deck, Reset Your Hand, and End Your Turn; the other steps are optional.
S&S Rulebook p10 wrote:

Encountering a Card

When you encounter a card, you—and only you—can go through the following steps.
S&S Rulebook p12 wrote:
Attempting a check requires several actions that are explained below.

So, the parts of the turn, and the part of an encounter are steps. But there is an important difference between the steps of a turn and the steps of an encounter: You can also play cards and use powers between the steps of a turn, but you may not play cards or use power between the steps of an encounter.

S&S Rulebook p10 wrote:

Encountering a Card

Players may not play any cards or activate any powers between those steps.

There is no such rule for the turn sequence. And Vic confirmed you could play cards and powers between steps of the turn. And you can play as many cards and use as many powers as you want between the steps of the turn.

During an encounter, each check is it's own step.

Apply any effects that happen when you encounter a card.
Apply any evasion effects.
Apply any effects that happen before you act.
Attempt the check.
Attempt the next check, if needed.
Apply any effects that happen after you act.
Resolve the encounter.

The rulebook tells you to repeat the "Attempt the next check, if needed" step as many times as you need to resolve all the checks. So the limit resets on each check.

So, each time you start anything that the rulebook calls a step (part of a turn, or part of an encounter) you start mew with what cards you can play. So, if an encounter takes place during the "End your turn" step of the turn (like a location that makes you encounter a monster at the end of your turn), the steps of the encounter are what matter, not the step of the turn that you are on.

The Turn:
Advance the blessing deck <--New Step
Give a card <--New Step
Move <--New Step
Explore <--New Step
Attempt to close a location <--New Step
End your <--New Step

Anytime an encounter fits in the there, it also starts new steps. So at Shark Island, where you explore and also encounter a card while exploring, then attempt to close the empty location:

Advance the blessing deck <--New Step
--Encounter Hammerhead Shark
---Apply any effects that happen when you encounter a card. <--New Step
---Apply any evasion effects. <--New Step
---Apply any effects that happen before you act. <--New Step
---Attempt the check. <--New Step
---Attempt the next check, if needed. <--New Step
---Apply any effects that happen after you act. <--New Step
---Resolve the encounter. <--New Step
Give a card <--New Step
Move <--New Step
Explore <--New Step
--Encounter Hammerhead Shark
---Apply any effects that happen when you encounter a card. <--New Step
--Encounter an item
---Apply any evasion effects. <--New Step
---Apply any effects that happen before you act. <--New Step
---Attempt the check. <--New Step
---Attempt the next check, if needed. <--New Step
---Apply any effects that happen after you act. <--New Step
---Resolve the encounter. <--New Step
Attempt to close a location <--New Step
--Encounter Hammerhead Shark
---Apply any effects that happen when you encounter a card. <--New Step
---Apply any evasion effects. <--New Step
---Apply any effects that happen before you act. <--New Step
---Attempt the check. <--New Step
---Attempt the next check, if needed. <--New Step
---Apply any effects that happen after you act. <--New Step
---Resolve the encounter. <--New Step
End your <--New Step

And on each of those new steps, you can use any card or power again (assuming it applies to the situation).

So, a check is one of the many steps of an encounter (and can sometimes happen in other steps of the encounter). Checks can also happen outside of an encounter, and even between steps of a turn (if you played Cure for example). Does that help?

Yes, there are a lot of Steps. Thanks

Another Questions.

If one Card tells you to "display" a different card is that card now out of play for that step?

For example a Smuggler says "Before you act, display a random card from your hand. If defeated, discard it; if undefeated, bury it."

Since it has been displayed it can't be played during that check or used by another card or power during that check?

Example If I randomly display an ally I can't use it for Heggal's power "You may reveal an ally that lists Diplomacy in its check to acquire to add 1d4 to your check"?

Correct. This is due to a combination of two rules.

S&S Rulebook p10 wrote:
Display: Place it faceup in front of your character, unless stated otherwise; the card’s powers function until it’s discarded. When a character displays a card, it is not part of that character’s hand, deck, or discard pile, but it still belongs to that character.

And a bit further down...

S&S Rulebook p10 wrote:
If you are instructed to play, reveal, display, discard, recharge, bury, banish, or otherwise manipulate a card, that card must come from your hand unless otherwise specified.

So Heggal's power doesn't specify that the ally should come from anywhere else, so the ally for his power has to come from your hand. Any displayed ally isn't part of your hand, so you can't use it for his power.

And it isn't just for that step, it is until that card stops being displayed, which so far I think has always been determined by the card that caused it to be displayed in the first place. i.e. the Smuggler tells you when to stop displaying the random card, the Rage spell tells you when to stop displaying Rage, and Oloch's power tells you when to stop displaying his weapons and blessings.

Hello everybody,

I found this topic while searching to the answer to my specific question and even if it does not relate to my question directly, I will ask it here because Hawkmoon wrote something which will be very useful to explain my problem:

And on each of those new steps, you can use any card or power again (assuming it applies to the situation).

Ok, so here is my questions. In the rule book, two things are specified to the best of my understanding:

(1). when a card does not specify when we are allowed to play it, we can play it at any time when we are normally allowed to play cards.
(2). during the steps of an encounter, we can only play cards that are direclty related to the step.

This is quite fuzzy to me so I will give you some cards examples :

Phantasmal minion : let us imagine that my friend is taking damage because he failed a combat check (step = attempt the check of an encounter). Can I use the phantasmal minion card to give him an armor or can I only play a card that directly reduces his damage taken?

More generally : could you please list the steps (from the above) where "charm animal" can be played by the active character? (When is it considered to be related to the step?)

If you discard a blessing to explore again, is it part of the exploration step of the turn? And does this mean that you cannot discard two blessings to perform two extra explorations (because it means playing two times the same type of card during one single step?)

Thank you for your patience with a non-native speaker like me ;)

I would say you can't play Phantasmal Minion or Charm Animal during an encounter. You could play them during any part a turn except during an encounter and during "End Your Turn" (when only "End of the Turn" powers can be played).

You can discard 1 blessing to explore again, then after finishing that exploration, discard another blessing to explore again. Each time you do that, you create a duplicate "Explore" step.

Thank you for your fast answers!
