Hey there, I've done a double check on the tool on our end, and it doesn't appear that this has been a feature on the submission tool at any point. However, it might be a good idea to have this alert for people previewing prior to submission, so I'll forward it on to our tech team as a feature request for future contests :)
When I checked the submission tool it offered a word count next to the title/name.
Huh... that's really weird. It might be something I'm just not seeing/isn't replicating properly on our side, either way I'll let the team know.

Did you have a name in the subject line? Without that, you don't get the word count (at least previously; I've not tried this year).
(And FWIW, you've always been able to get the word count without preview. One of the scariest parts of Superstar every year is going to preview your item and being petrified you'll accidentally hit submit.)

I agree, I kept hitting the Preview button while tweaking my submission, hoping against hope I didn't accidentally hit the Submit button. Maybe next year they will consider having the Submit button un-highlighted (make unusable) until the Preview button is hit at least once first? Just a thought. It might prevent a few mistaken entries, but it also might confuse people too.
(Yes, I previewed this first before I submitted it...)

I actually would love to request that you CAN'T hit submit until you hit preview.
I get that it does weed out some of the less professional or ready to be professional, but I hit the wrong button on accident from time to time in my life...plus it wouldn't hurt to force folks to take a second glance.
If anyone complains that they need to edit their item after being FORCED to preview...well...that's an easy time to say tough luck.

When I previewed my submission, it posted the word count. I had to scroll to the top of the page and it wasn't immediately obvious but it was there.

I understand it's nerve wracking, but so is a lot of what a freelancer has to do. I don't want to add training wheels to a contest designed to find a Superstar writer. In fact, I am a big proponent of making things harder, so anyone who makes it to the final four knows they have what it takes to be a freelance writer.

That is not necessarily mutually exclusive with freelancing.
