so they did stuff three hundred thousand years before humans?

So has anyone found a nuclear waste dump?

*shrug* They also used fire at least 400 thousands years ago if not earlier. Making parallel scratches on shell is little compared to that.

They had to track poker debts some way.

Before humans? Not really. Homo Erectus is human, it's just a different species of human. Kind of like how a lion and a tiger are both big cats, but they aren't quite the same species. Homo Erectus, Homo Neanderthalensis, and Homo Sapiens are all genus homo, or human. This is important, because we have a tendency to trivialize exactly how intelligent our cousin species were. Hell, we even forget how intelligent past Homo Sapiens were all the time. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Homo Erectus could track the movement of the sun. It's a useful skill for a nomad.
