Non cleric Characters and gods

Rules Questions

i know that clerics can only worship gods 1 step up or down from their alignment but what about normal characters? i haven't found anything about it and i got into a argument because a lawful evil character wanted to worship a Chaotic good god.

That made no sense to me at all that's total alignment opposition so whats the ruling regarding non cleric type characters and god alignment worship?

Dark Archive

Check the FAQ, that's for pathfinder society. There are no rules about worshiping elsewhere as far as I know.

Grand Lodge

There is nothing in the rules against characters who do not receive deific support worshiping gods that oppose the character's alignment.

Check with your GM to see if they have objections.

TOZ and Helcack called it. The fun part is explaining how a character who fundamentally views the world in terms of a chain of command, rules, organization, or whatnot comes to worship a being that values individual freedoms. Those are the things to consider...and that great stories are made from.

That all depends on what you mean by "worship".

Plenty of people go through the motions of worship without actually giving a damn about what their deity truly represents.

Was your lawful evil friend trying to get some sort of mechanical benefit from the association with an opposed deity? If so, deities have a funny way of withholding their mechanical benefits from those they deem unworthy.

Unless you're playing Pathfinder Society, which in that case it seems to be covered by the above FAQ post.

The question is why does the character want to worship that particular god? What does he/she value in that god's repertoire of teachings? Does it make sense for the character to like those qualities and ideals? For me it would have to be very convincing to bridge that alignment gap and the god might not even recognize them as a follower because of their utter disregard for its moral ideals. Basically it would come to heretical worship: Changing how one views the god in terms of morality and taking teachings they like and ditching ones that conflict with who they are and their alignment.

There are plenty of people who do this in real life, so why not? (Just look at the Westborough Baptist Church.)

yeah that is actually a good point i'll ask them to see why they want to do it though heretical worship does make sense thanks!

You're welcome and thanks for thinking my advice was good.
