All,
I picked up the starter set and character add on set. I am starting the Brigadoom scenario as suggested in the rulebook included. I decided to start with the plain vanilla character setups in the back of the rulebook to get started and I picked Harsk
I would appreciate any clarification to the below question.
1. Do you look at the character deck? I assume you do in order to decide what weapon, blessing, etc to play during a turn. Also to give a player another card or help during their turn, you would need to see the cards and not pick a random one.
2. The first location I went to, the first card is a Monster (Mercenary). So if I beat him, I can close the location (from the faq if I read it correct)
3. My first encounter, I am just trying to figure out the game mechanics. As indicated above, I have Harsk and encountered a Mercenary. The Check to Defeat on the card is 10. So if I attack the Mercenary with Harsk and use his light cross bow, I would roll my Dexterity (1d8) from the character card and I get the ranged +3 from the character card AND I get to roll 1d8 from the crossbow for my check?
Sorry for the simple questions, but I'm just trying to get started.

Welcome, Toy4x4!
I will probably get ninja'd because I'm a slow typist.
1. You deal your starting hand out of your character deck. Harsk's hand is five cards. The hand size is found on each character card. Those are the ones you can look at, play, give to another character, etc.
2. You do not get to close the location for monsters, only henchmen and villains. The bane cards are marked as such.
3. You are correct with that.
I have only been playing for a short time as well. I am on the first adventure deck of RotR and have been loving it. You will find the community here to be very helpful and knowledgeable.
I am also playing Harsk. Very durable and well-rounded in my opinion.
Hope this helps.

Hi Toy4x4. Waycoolsuperdude has the right answers there for you. The rulebook has lots of sequences, including setting up the game, taking your turn, encountering a card, and attempting a check. I'd recommend you play the first time just going through the rulebook slowly. You might find this guide helpful. And there are some videos you can watch to see people play to get an idea of how things work.
Good luck on your adventure!

You don't look at the character deck, unless you play a card that tells you to do so. The cards tell you what you should do, for the most part. To start with, as Waycoolsuperdude said, you draw up to your hand size (five, for Harsk, at least at the beginning). You have to make sure that he has at least one of his "favored" card types in his hand (weapon, I think?). If you have no Weapon card in your hand, then you put aside the first five and draw five new ones. Rinse and repeat until you get a weapon, then shuffle everything that's left back together.

Technically, you get to close the location when you defeat a villain and when a card tells you that you may attempt to do so. Meaning that there can be henchman that don't allow you to close a location, and there can be other cards that do. (Also, when it's empty, you can make 1 attempt per turn while at that location.)
