"Aid Another" to remove a suggestion?

Homebrew and House Rules

So my group recently went into a dungeon that was staffed by quite a few succubi, and discovered that suggestion is dangerous. Despite this, they decided that preparing multiple dispel magics for the day wasn't really a good idea and continued onward. To be fair, the succubi's caster level compared to their CR is...surprising, and it would be hard for them to remove said suggestions anyway, but, well, sucks to not be a demon, I guess.

I ended up allowing them to use the aid another action to grant another party member an additional chance at a saving throw with a penalty, which I'm not regretting, because it sort of coddles them for not bothering to prepare dispel magics.

What do you guys think about using aid another in this manner? Do you ever do something similar? Good idea/bad idea, why?

I think it's coddling too much to let the party use an at-will, mundane means to counter suggestion. I don't mean to say that mundane methods should NEVER have any effect on magical effects. Enemies that rely on enchantments can be pretty powerful, but they're also really easy to counter using the Protection from Evil spell. The spell is a staple against any kind of demon or devil, and it lasts forever. If they're going into a dungeon knowing it's full of succubi and they didn't prepare anything against it, it's their fault if they get enchanted.

I actually could see an aid another help with the initial save (+2), but I don't see it granting a second save.

I really don't think you should coddle them that much though. I mean if you let them know that there is a succubi with the ability to suggest and already knew the dangers and they still decided to go on ahead without preparing, they either misunderstood something, know you won't let real harm come to their characters, or are trying to see how much they can get away with before you let something terrible happen.

a protection from evil 10ft radius lasts for 10mins/lvl, with a lesser rod of extend that is just 3k, they should have it up for up to 2 hours/casting at lvl6 (i assume they are at least that since they have access to dispel)

no need to use aid another for things that is not intended.. and how does exactly one "helps" another get a reroll? telling him "no you shouldn't" ? that seems a bit far stretched

Great. Glad to see I'm not being a total d**k when I say no more of that nonsense. You're all completely right. If they can't be bothered to bring along level 1 spells to the party, they deserve to murdered.

Thanks. :)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'd allow it, if it was accompanied by a nonlethal unarmed strike and shouting "Get a hold of yourself, man!"

Verdant Wheel

maybe at a stiff penalty so as not to invalidate class abilities that allow precisely this privilege (Slippery Mind) and only one retry per effect?

Nah, that's kind of how I was playing it. Slap a character, allow a new save at a penalty of -4, but, honestly? If they can't pack a level 1 spell with them at level 10, they deserve to die.
