Undefeated Bloodbug Summoned by Pirate Hunting

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Oloch encountered the Pirate Hunting barrier and a Bloodbug was summoned. He did not defeat the Bloodbug. Both the Bloodbug and barrier card have "if undefeated" powers. How should this be played e.g. if the card is displayed next to Oloch's deck can other characters encounter the bloodbug as the Pirate Hunting barrier is still face up on the location deck. What if subsequent players do not defeat the "same" bloodbug? Could get interesting!

If the Bloodbug had been summoned by a power that only said "Summon and encounter a random monster", it would be returned to the box after the encounter, as per the rule that states that it returns to the box and only the summoning effect can tell you otherwise.

As such, my personal interpretation is that the fact that it was summoned overrules the Bloodbug's "if undefeated" power, and the power of the summoning card (Pirate Hunting) applies. Keep the bug next to Pirate Hunting for characters to encounter when they explore, and it doesn't stick to them if they fail to defeat it.

I'd agree. The summoned monster can't be displayed in front of you, because only the summoning card can tell you to do something other than put it back in the box. And the summoning card tells you to leave it faceup.

I'd also say "finish one thing before you start another". The first thing you are doing is finishing the Pirate Hunting barrier, so doing what it says takes precedence over doing what the monster would say (if they conflict).

I concur. Bloodbug goes back to the box after the encounter. Pirate Hunting stays face up on the location deck happily waiting the next exploration.

I can't quite figure out the full intent of what you are saying. So just to be clear, I'm saying that if Pirate Hunting summons Bloodbug because you aren't on a ship, and you don't defeat the Bloodbug, the Bloodbug stays with the Pirate Hunting barrier faceup at the location. Then, when you do finally defeat the Bloodbug, it goes back to the box.

I think that is what you are saying, but wanted to be sure, since I could also read what you said as is the Pirate Hunting barrier stayed at the location by itself without the summoned card. So I just wanted to be sure.

Yeah, shouldn't write in a hurry and run ...

I meant that it doesn't attach itself to him (as normal). But since it was summoned by Pirate Hunting, it needs to stay with Pirate Hunting until resolved (defeated). And Pirate Hunting stays on top of the location.

Sorry.
