Crypt of the Everflame for PFS - Level Comparison??

Silver Crusade 2/5

Hey all. I am looking to run CoE as a PFS module. From what I have read on the forums, running the module as a non-PFS standalone adventure puts players at somewhere between 2nd and 3rd level by it's end so 1st level adventures will level up once, if not twice. PFS modules grant 3XP which would just put a party of 1st level players at 2nd level once the module is complete. How is a 1st level party supposed to finish the module without the aid of leveling up mid-module which is what the adventure seems to be designed for? Having read the module, I can see some serious issues if the party remains level 1 for the entire adventure.

I hope I am not covering old ground here. I did search the forums for an answer to this since it seems this would have already been addressed, but I came up empty.

Thanks in advance...

I've played it as a level 1 and run it in pfs. The module is hard but a party of 6 can do it and its fun. Also the module is 1-2 in tier so one or two level 2 characters can help alot. If all players are level one with no perstige so no cure wands or anything then it can be hard. But in general it is do able.

people up to level 2 can play it for pfs, accept level 2 players. Also I'm playing level 1 in it right now and at the very end and yes it is a bit hard, but with really smart players it is possible to survive. I was unconscious twice for carelessness, ie. I normally check for traps and I forgot to in one area and I went to close to an enemy as a sorcerer.

It does need player skill at level 1, but you as a DM could step in. Although you have to do the module as written in PFS, how you DM it could help your players survive. Like if they forget to check for traps, (I think, but I'm not too sure) you can roll perceptions for them so that you can say you don't step on the trap because the character sees it.

There are other ways you can almost guarantee characters live, but not sharing my secrets.

I ran the Godsmouth heresy a while back. Same problem as Crypt: At lvl 1 it can be quite deadly.

We had a full party of six. Two players level two, the rest level one. Also, this was not the first run for the level ones. They did have one or two scenarios under their belt, so consumables could be bought for 2PP.

If you run it, I advise you to have a mixed party. Some lvl 2s and some lvl ones.
Also, it really helps if its not the first run for the lvl ones so they have some consumables and updated gear.

Yeah, best to not run this for a group of completely new level 1s. Maybe run them through First Steps 1 and/or The Confirmation first, so they can get some better equipment than just the 150 starting gp can buy.

Which is a shame, because the whole setup for the module is first adventure/rite of passage.

I ran this in PFS for three 2nd level PCs bringing along the pregen Kyra. I adapted the setup story to be "You are veteran pathfinders. The Society has deemed that Kyra is a good candidate for membership, so go help her complete her coming of age ritual so she can join us." Of course, that setup only works if you've got at least 1 pregen / new character.
