Arcane Trickster questions

Rules Questions

Ok so I've allowed a player of mine to play a rogue 3 / Cleric 3 / Arcane trickster 4.He is a cleric of Calistra(sp?) and has the domains of Trickery and Magic. As the DM I don't see a problem with it and so of course it is fine and works in game because I allowed it.

However a friend of mine out side of the group is disputing a couple of things and I'd like some clarification on the read as written part of the rules and to know if their are any FAQ's that would make this build not work.

Questions.

1) Are spell like abilities spells for all intents and purposes of meeting the qualifications of a prerequisite? AKA a rogue that takes the minor magic rogue talent to get mage hand. Does that mage hand as a spell like ability count as having the spell mage hand / being able to cast the spell mage hand for the arcane trickster PRC or do you actually have to have it on a spell list?

2) The Domain Magic and Trickery both give you 2nd level Arcane spells. Trickery gives Invisibility and the magic domain gives the spell Magic mouth. Both of those spells are 2nd level Arcane spells. The Arcane trickster class states that you MUST be able to cast at least one 2nd level arcane spell to be able to play this PRC. Do arcane spells from your divine domains count towards this?

3) If your Domain spell that is listed as an arcane spell is in fact an arcane spell do you suffer arcane spell failure when you attempt to cast it?

The rogue talent works but clerics cast divine spells. However if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

1 - SLAs may be used to meet prerequisites. So, if a prerequisite is the ability to cast a 3rd level arcane spell, and you have an SLA that is a 3rd level arcane spell, then you meet the prerequisite. But, for example, if the prerequisite is the have 5 levels in an arcane spell-casting class, then a 3rd level SLA wouldn't meet that prerequisite. Also, see the guidelines on determining whether an SLA is arcane or divine.

2 - The domain spells given to clerics are NOT arcane spells. They are divine spells. So, NO, your cleric domain spells cannot be used to fulfill a prerequisite of being able to cast a 2nd level arcane spell (even if that spell is also on an arcane caster's list).

3 - NO, since it is NOT an arcane spell.

HOWEVER, as Durngrun seems to be saying, you are the GM, you allowed it, and it isn't causing problems in your game, so I'd just let it go. The only person it seems to be bothering is someone NOT playing in your game. Now, if the complaint was coming from another player who felt their PC was diminished by your generosity towards the Arcane Trickster character, then maybe you should think about it, but in the present case, I wouldn't worry.

Yes

They have stated Divine magic/powers from a divine source are still divine. So trickery's "mirror image" SLA actually counts as a divine SLA, as does any spell it grants.

N/A because of above. No.

That being said, if your fine with allowing it just go with it. Its not going to be over powered or break the game, and it will be a cool PC to have in the party for both you and the players. I actually contemplated a divine trickster using early entry from a 2nd level racial SLA.

Please let us know on this thread how it turns out later, I'd personally be interested to know

Can anyone give me links or page numbers for these rules?

Spells come in two types: arcane (cast by bards, sorcerers, and wizards) and divine (cast by clerics, druids, and experienced paladins and rangers).

Yup. Besides what it applies to (applying it to divine spell levels instead of arcane) it's legit by FAQ style.
and since your the gm and allowed a "divine trickster" no real harm frankly. I kinda always felt like more of the prestige classes should be caster these days. (Since all the new divine caster types, some of them really fit well with some of the classes)

So really; DM allowed it, not breaking anything, not really a big deal.
