So I get that Rift of Ruin is a 5 feet wide line of 5 ft/level. However, it is unclear to me whether this needs to be a straight line or not. Could the Rift form a pattern? Because this would greatly affect the effectiveness of this spell, of course.

Considering that the spell does not call it a line, but calls it a hole, and adds the letter S in parenthesis after the area (which means shapeable, see Aiming-a-Spell then the last line under Area), means that it can be any shape you want, as long as all squares are contiguous (meaning that they touch one square to another, even at corners).
As a note, the spell overrides the requirements of Shapeable, in that the pit is always 5-ft. wide.
