I am a proud noob. I really love the Shaman spell List and was considering building a a Tengus Shaman.
I thought the Lore Spirit would be a good choice. Being a Tengus I thought it would look weird with anything but a a Bird as his Spirit Animal. However I am having trouble picking one. Raven is obvious choice but I really care nothing about the appraise skill.
I was thinking either owl, hawk, or thrush.
FIRST QUESTION: What bird spirit animal should I get.
SECOND QUESTION: If I use the Lore Spirit's "Arcane Enlightenment" hex to ad Magic Missile to my spell list I should be able to use a wand of magic missile without having to roll UMD, correct?
Also I don't want to give the impression that I am set on Tengus. I am open to other race suggestions. I was considering Gnome with a Goat spirit might be fun. Any other suggestions?

You are a Tengu shaman, it is only right you have a bird familiar.
Get a Thrush. The thrush gives +3 to Diplomacy and you probably haven't dumped Cha and you get Diplomacy in class. Bear in mind a Shaman is a bit of a jack of all trades, so he needs some good skills. Diplomacy is a great one. The thrush can also hold a wand and speak so you can give it UMD. Not only that, but it can scout without being noticed and report back in whatever language you wish. My Tengu Shaman and his familiar have exactly the same feather pattern, it isn't much, but it's a nice little roleplaying bonus.
You are a Tengu, so consider getting a rapier, Weapon Finesse and dumping Str. The reason I suggest this is that as a Lore Shaman you already have to boost Int so you don't have enough stat points to go round. There is a trait to key Diplomacy off Int as well. Look for these little cuts.
As for the second question, yes. It becomes a spell you know so no UMD needed.
