I have been working on a ninja-esk Ranger for a coming campaign, all had gone well until I decided that having the Oni type as a Favored Enemy would be a great idea. With little experience playing a Ranger, I am unsure on how to select such an expensively typed creature (Outside: giant, native, Oni and shapechanger). I tried to search the various rulings and forum posts, finding little information (aside from broad stroking the Oni typing with Outside -native- or Humanoid -giant-) I decide to break my paizo message board cherry and post here.
So to sum it all up, how would I choose Oni as a Favored Enemy for my Ranger?
Thanks in advance for your time and guidance.

Outsider (evil) or outsider (native) would suffice for this--and you'd get the side benefit of your favored enemy bonus working on some non-oni creatures. Humanoid (giant) would not work as oni are not humanoids. I recommend outsider (evil), as they come up more often as opponents than outsider (native).

Thanks for the quick reply! But, I have one more question regarding "Oni not being considered humanoids" ultimately I question this due to the lines here from the d20PFSRD site;
- An oni is an evil spirit who takes humanoid form to become a native outsider. All oni have the following traits, unless otherwise noted in a specific creature’s entry.
Darkvision 60 feet and low-light vision.
Change Shape (Su) All oni are shapechangers with the shapechanger subtype, but an oni takes only other shapes similar to its normal humanoid form.
Here -> Humanoid Shape: As evil spirits clad in humanoid flesh, all oni possess a humanoid subtype. <- Here
Regeneration (Ex) The rate of regeneration and damage type that suspends it depends on the type of oni, but is typically acid or fire. -
On a totaly unrelated note, what are the text commands for bold text?

Indeed, and that's why they have, e.g., the giant subtype. That makes them giants but not humanoids. Favored enemy (humanoid (giant)) requires the target to be both humanoid and giant.
You can type bold text using {b}this syntax{/b}, but with square brackets instead of curly braces. (See the "How to format your text" line below the thread.)

Yet again, I thank you for being helping me out.
I am glad I decided to post here, I was able to clear up my questions rather quickly.| Aelryinth RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16 |
I think all Oni have the Oni Subtype, but I don't think that there's a Bane or FE for that. So, since they don't have Evil, yeah, gonna have to go with Outsider (native). I wouldn't raise it more then once, however. Too many other common things you're going to need that FE bonus for.
Unless you're Instant Enemying all day, of course.

Yet again, I would like to thank everyone for their timely assistance.
Since my questions have all been answered, I believe that closing this thread would be the correct choice. Unfortunately, due to my inexperience with these message boards I am unsure if such an function is available to me.
For now, I shall attempt to display this threads completion by modifying my original post. It seems that is not possible...
