Some questions about the Chronicle Sheets and Upgrading Items

Pathfinder Society

Silver Crusade

So I finished my first Scenario, #79, The Half-Dead City.

I understand how the XP works, as that whole session was worth 3, and I can now move on to level 2. What I don't understand, is the items listed below, the Fame, Prestige, and Starting GP.

*************************************************************************** *****
For the Boons listed:
Do I choose one and cross off the other; and it's permanently active throughout every session for that character?
*************************************************************************** *****
For the Items Listed:
Do I gain all of this gold value? Do I gain one item of choice and sell it back for the GP value? Do I just ignore this section? I don't really know what to do here.

Scarab Shield - 4399GP
Akhentepi's Armor - 5235GP
Potion of Darkvision - 300GP
Potion of Lesser Restoration - 300GP
Ring of Protection +1 - 2000GP
Silversheen - 250GP
*************************************************************************** *****
Prestige:
I've gained 4. What exactly does Prestige do and how do I use it?
*************************************************************************** *****
Starting GP:
I assume this is how much GP I've gathered in that session. Does this add to the total from the items? Is there some merchant I can use this at?
*************************************************************************** *****
Overall for Upgrading Items:
Currently I don't have anything really, aside from some potions. I really need to acquire an AoMF with Agile on it. How do I go about doing this? Is there some special listing I can look at that let's me know about available items for PFS?
*************************************************************************** *****

Sorry for the barrage of questions, I'm just fairly new to this sort of thing, and it's my first PFS experience.

Welcome to PFS! I'm glad you enjoyed your first PFS experience, and hope you stay for more.

You should give the section in the free Guide to Organized Play a good reading through. It will explain quite a bit about the special rules for PFS.

You should get the boons that you earned. Any boons unearned should be crossed off by your GM, unless the boon specifically says something like "Choose one and cross the rest off your Chronicle sheet."

As for items and Prestige, Prestige can be traded in for bonuses, items, or spellcasting services. Increasing your Prestige also increases your Fame. Fame determines the upper buy limit that you spend on items when paying gold. Anything that you cannot buy from your upper buy limit must be either always available or on your chronicle sheet. So for example, your current Fame (4) is not enough to buy a 4339GP item, and it won't be for a few levels. BUT if you gather enough money to buy the item, you can purchase it anyway because this chronicle sheet unlocks that Scarab Shield.

Starting GP is how much money you had when you started the scenario. You'll go ahead and do the math down with however much you started the scenario with, and then keep a running total as you go through your sheets. Your "Starting GP" for the next Chronicle sheet should be the total GP you ended this sheet with.

For Upgrading Items, see this FAQ.

Welcome to PFS! It's a great campaign, but ti has a few weird rules to deal with the whole "different GMs every time" thing. All of this is covered in the Guide to Organized Play, which is a free download from the Pathfinder Society page. You really do need to read this to be able to figure out the campaign.

Quick answers:

* You get the gold listed on the right side of the Chronicle sheet - you don't keep any items you found. Essentially, it is all turned in to the Society and they pay you out in cash - so no one fights over who gets the XXX.
* If you want an item, you buy it with your gold, either from the "Always Available" item list in the Guide, or an item listed on your Chronicle sheet. Your purchases are limited by your Fame score, also explained in the Guide. You likely can't buy an Amulet of Mighty Fists yet, since it costs more than you have.

* Prestige lets you call in favors to get spells cast on you for free, etc. Again, see the Guide.

A lot of these questions can be answered by reading the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play.

Prestige and fame are gained at the same rate (in general whenever you gain prestige you also gain fame). Your fame never decreases, and in general is the total of all prestige you have ever earned. You can use your prestige to purchase spellcasting services as outlined in the GtPSOP, however the most common use is once per scenario gain an item worth up to 750gp for two prestige (this cannot be combined to obtain an item worth more than 750gp).

Starting gp for a beginning character is how much you have left over from character creation, or 150gp if you plan to deduct your starting purchases on the chronicle sheet. Don't forget to fill out an Inventory Tracking Sheet as outlined in the GtPSOP.

In general you can purchase items with gold in three ways:

1. The item is 'always available' as defined in the GtPSOP.
2. The item has a purchase price less than or equal to what your fame score would allow you to purchase, as defined in the GtPSOP.
3. The item appears on one of your character's chronicle sheets. Sometimes these items have a purchase limit, which means that your character an only ever purchase that many through that particular chronicle sheet.

Upgrading items works the same way. When you upgrade an item you pay the difference in cost between the version of the item you have and the version of the item to which you are upgrading, however the total cost of the final item must be under your fame score purchase limit.

So if you want an amulet of mighty fists, agile then you need to be able to purchase a 4,000gp item (since the AOMF is a special case where you can get a weapon special ability added directly to the amulet without needing it to be +1 already). You as a player also need to own a physical copy or official .pdf watermarked with your name and e-mail address in order to purchase and use the magic item (this goes for feats, spells, classes, etc.). In the case of agile this means that you need to own a copy of the Pathfinder Society Field Guide.

First off, welcome to PFS. Might I suggest downloading and reading through the Guide to Organized Play. It can help you understand some of the sections of the chronicle you have received. That said, I'll go through what I can, but again you might find more clarity in the Guide itself.

For the Boons on the chronicle, yes you do need to choose one of the two boons and cross the other one off of the sheet. In reading the chronicle, it appears that Hieroglyphic Knowledge is a one shot boon meaning when you use it you cross it off the chronicle sheet and no longer have it. That is because it specifically states, "When you use this boon, cross it off your Chronicle sheet.". The other boon does not include such language, so it would be an ongoing bonus to the character. Again, you only get one of the two boons, and need to choose before leveling up.

For the Items listed, the prices listed are the purchase price of the items. If you want one of the items, you have to spend your gold on them. These items are all items that were found during the adventure, but are not on the always available list per the Guide.

For Prestige, this is used to track your purchasing power through your faction and also you can spend them to gain benefits from your faction. You start out only being able to purchase those items listed as always available in the Guide. To purchase most magic items, you need to unlock that purchase power by gaining fame/prestige within your faction. At 5 prestige, you can purchase any legal item worth 500gp or less as long as you own the resource (i.e. book/PDF) it comes from. The chart on pg. 25 of the Guide tells you the various levels other gold piece levels opens up.

Starting GP is how much you had left over from the character creation portion, in which you had 150GP to spend (since this was your first adventure). You put that value there, and do the math with what the GM put down as gold gained/spent on your chronicle to find out how much you have to spend on the items you are interested in and are available to your fame/prestige level. You are able to buy any items you are legal to buy in any settlement of 5,000 or more people. You are assumed to go back to Absalom in between scenario/module/AP's unless the scenario leaves you in a specific place as part of a series.

Upgrading items. You can look at the Additional Resources section of the PFS site here on Paizo to tell you what pages from various resources are available to purchase. In order to buy an AoMF with Agile, you need to have 18 fame/prestige and have purchased the book (or PDF) Pathfinders Field Guide from the Campaign Setting line (as this is the only book it's currently in I believe). Between the AR section of the website, and the fame table in the Guide, you can find out what is legal and what value you can purchase. The Archives of Nethys is good for a 3rd party website to peruse legal items that might be available and what resource you would need to buy to purchase it in Society play.

Again, the Guide will spell out a lot of this in much more detail than I have, but welcome to Society play.

(Also, a slight correction, you played an Adventure Path book rather than a Scenario or Module. All 3 are slightly different and have slightly different manners of handling them. Just an FYI, as starting out I realize it's all pretty much the same to the player.)

And, probably ninja'd a lot I'm assuming...

Silver Crusade

So all I really have is the 1,536GP gained from the session, along with 4 Prestige. Those items listed, are items I have access to and can buy, but otherwise those aren't part of anything I gain.

Is that correct?

also, thank you for the welcome and such quick responses! I'm reading through the guide now as well.

Correct. Plus whatever gold you had leftover after spending your starting 150 gp, which as as others have stated, is what you write into the "starting GP" slot on the chronicle sheet.
