Advice

I'm trying to create a high-level oceanid (Bestiary 4 p. 208) antagonist, and gave her 1 level of sorcerer (aquatic bloodline), 1 level of fighter, and 10 levels of eldritch knight.

So here are the feats taken over those 12 levels:

Feats: Point-Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Weapon Focus (waterspout), Shot on the Run, Weapon Specialization (waterspout), Improved Precise Shot (waterspout), Vital Strike, Devastating Strike, Improved Vital Strike, Greater Vital Strike.

My question: Is an attack with the waterspout (which, though part of a supernatural ability, does not get its own Su entry, and is called out as a ranged attack rather than a ranged touch attack) eligible for Vital Strike and Improved Point-Blank Mastery?

If so, then between her Shot-on-the-Run feat, 80-foot swim speed, and 28d6+8 waterspout with a Quickened true strike, she might actually present a competent high-level foe, unlike most mid-level fey with class levels other than pure martial.

If I give her access to the druid list, barksin + mage armor + shield will give her a respectable AC for the level, but she'll be over 100 hp below par, and her saves are abysmal.

Any ideas?

You could use Vital Strike with waterspout, but not with Shot on the Run. This is because Vital Strike can only be used with the Attack Action, which is a specific kind of standard action, and Shot on the Run is a full round action that just lets you make an attack, and it's not considered an Attack Action.

i believe that eldritch knight requires you to Able to cast 3rd-level arcane spells., i am not sure that Spell like ability's count towards this do they ?

If Oceanid has a Spell Like Ability which mimics a 3rd level arcane spell then it does. Big-to-do like a year ago about SLAs allowing you to qualify for feats, which has since been expanded to Prestige Classes.

A reated FAQ also answered how to assign a level to spell like abilities.

@ Rambear

Ah thanks for the Clarification, so much to read and so little time :D

Yet another reason Vital Strike sucks.
