One of the things I didn't like was people being in the RuneForge for 10,000 years so I slowed time down in it.
When someone makes contact with the RuneForge (even scrying) the RuneForge environment is active for 4+d4 days, after which time inside stops.
So for the last 10,000 years the RunForge has only been active for a couple hundred. Long enough for the backstory inside to happen, but no long enough that everyone would had ended themselves from boredom.

Each section doesn't really contact the other sections, and I've been giving each section a chance to notice the PCs killing everything in another section.
Azaven is the only one who noticed so far, and has been collecting the dead. He was very happy when he found the stacks and stack of Vrazeris' clones. The PCs will have a couple more mummies waiting for them.

My players talk to everyone. Last session the party gave the cleric grief for not negotiating with a roper.
So there was a lot of moving from wing to wing, trying to gain allies or at least figure out what was going on. In all, the party only fought two wing leaders and let both of them surrender.
I played up the Runeforge attuning with people, slowly removing the need to eat and drink. They eventually realized that fully attuned people could never leave and, well, started to panic a bit at that point.
I had an escape valve in that I planned to have Karzoug's golem destroy the well itself during/after that fight, breaking the attunement and causing the demiplane to start collapsing.
In the end, those twin deadlines kept them moving. I think if things had gotten desperate enough, there would have been a feeding frenzy of people trying to escape the collapse. But the party was gone by then.
Cheers!

Azaven actually escaped the RuneFore!
In my game I traded out the Staff of Hungry shadows (because I would have use had him spend 3 rounds Calling devourers and killed the PCs) for a ring of spell turning.
He activated it before the fight. The wizard in the party also had spell turning going. The Wizard cast disintegrate on Azaven so we rolled on the chart to see what would happen.... 00!
"Both of you go through a rift into another plane."
Since I couldn't find a random plane chart I used the manual of the planes book. One went to "Bleak Eternity of Gehenna" and the other went to "Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus". The wizard quickly cast limited wish and plane shifted home. Azaven, unfortunately, didn't have plane shift nor limited wish memorized.
So his is currently on Mechanus without his spellbook and knows that the PCs have destroyed his phylactery. (Used adamantine warhammer that found in Arkrhyst's horde).
