My player already has darkvision, but shadowcaster

Advice

In my home game, I have a player interested in shadow caster Wizard Archetype, but he's going to have racial darkvision, an I'm not sure what to do...

He gets darkvision for his Race. He's not making the most optimized caster, but trading a feat for darkvision, which he already has, makes the archetype much less appealing as it takes two of his wiz bonus feats.

I'm considering giving him his bonus feat back. Does that seem to problematic, or fair enough

Silver Crusade

What is this class? Is it a prestige class?

Do you mean a Shadow Bloodline Sorcerer?

What race?

Some abilities that grant darkvision enhance the range if you already have darkvision. Even if that doesn't it would be a way to houserule it.

Grand Lodge

The Wizard archetype?

Sorry, the wizard Archetype.
I'll edit my post

Grand Lodge

What is the race?

Giving him one of the shadow-type metamagic feats (Shadow Grasp, Umbral Spell, Tenebrous.Spell) instead seems reasonable.

Silver Crusade

You could increase the range of his racial darkvision to 120' or even give him darkvision that works even in deeper darkness.

Think he is going drow or something with light sensitivity

Maybe I let him remove that, or let him switch to surface infiltrator sky racial trait?

Grand Lodge

Many of the PC Races with Darkvision, have an alternate racial trait they can take, to trade Darkvision for something else.

You mention Drow, which have the Surface Infiltrator alternate racial trait: Drow with this racial trait gain low-light vision, allowing them to see twice as far as humans in conditions of dim light. This racial trait replaces the darkvision and light blindness racial traits.

Many other races have similar things.

That is why I ask about Race.

By strict RAW, it's simply a redundant feature of the archetype. If it had specified, "gain 60' Darkvision -or- extend existing darkvision by 30'", that'd be one thing. But it is only intended to grant a character darkvision if they didn't already have it; it's likely a balance consideration so keep in mind that if you customize that aspect, you may be inadvertently making the archetype stronger than it was intended to be.
