what happens at third level in an Arcanist(Blade Adept, Unlettered)? do you just lose the ability to record spells or does your blade work as a quasi-familiar?
secondary question, do you think a GM allowing the blade to be the familiar is all that imbalancing, or otherwise exploity?

Well.. your familiar dies or otherwise no longer is your familiar I guess..
But It makes sense for the blackblade to take that place.. Since they don't overlap I'mma guess they thought about it at least abit and didn't see any issues.
Might have to pay the costs to change familiar sto it though.
I actually can't think of any way to exploit. because it's not a real familiar persay its not like you can get improved famliar etc.

as written if you have both these archetypes you lose the ability to cast arcanist spells at level 3.
it seems like the blade is intended to take the place of a familiar, since it replaces the arcane bonded object. i think it is reasonable to rule that the blade is treated similar to a scarred witch doctors totem mask.

As written the two archetypes don't work together. Whilst technically Allowed, the loss of your familiar at third level means you lose access to all your spells. Any rule that your blade acts as a familiar is a house rule, and not one I would endorse.
Allowed does not equal good.
I was just musing over getting an arcanist that was melee and didn't need a spell book. I found these two and laughed at the open hole that the deny familiars ability is only at 3rd level.
I thought it was funny enough to ask the board what they thought, when I posted no one cared so I moved on. :P

It says you can't have a familiar. Unlike "gain a familiar," "have a familiar" is an ongoing requirement, which means you have to somehow give up any previous familiar.
Personally I would be fine houseruling the blade to act as a familiar in whatever ways make sense (including storing spells) but that's definitely a house rule.
