Inspire Me

Advice

Dark Archive

So tomorrow is module day for pfs and I don't know what to play. I generally play things that really inspire me. My largest inspiration was a Cleric of Urgathoa however, I can't play that due to a friends request (he wants us to play together).

1.) Captain America is an option but its still in need of refinement and I'm not sure how I feel about Brawler base or Ranger Base.

2.) Half-Orc Invulnerable Rager. I have never played a barbarian before. This one is designed to be virtually immortal. The build is strange, focusing largely on taking hundreds (that's right) points of damage before being potentially killed. At the moment it doesn't have some barbarian staples so I am unsure of its worth.

3.) Aasimar/Tiefling/Tengu? I have a played level 1 Aasimar thingy. It was slated to be a nature oracle with the stupidly powerful horse. When I saw the errata for that, I lost interest. I tried going Tengu with a 'Dark Raven' concept but the feats never panned out and I didn't really get sparked with creativity aside. The last idea was maybe a lunar oracle with moonlight bridge, primal companion, the beast form powers and the moonbeam attack (all pretty thematic). But Idunno. Form of the beast comes online rather late and the really good stuff comes online even later. Everything else just didn't feel like 'enough'.

Out of all of these only the immortal barbarian sparked enough interest to sort of create itself instantly and full-bodied with a large degree of certainty. I am just not really feeling it like I thought I would.

Anybody have a great, intriguing and really freaking cool character concept better than what I have above? I need some help. I have to play a level 1 and want it to be something I'll enjoy the commitment to.

Aasimar and Tieflings are no longer available in PFS, without a Boon.

You can play a Kitsune, Nagaji or Wayang though.

Wayangs are weird, in that they are small, but have no penalty to strength.

Sorry, I'm not a Bard

Someone posted an obnoxiously focused rock throwing build somewhere on the boards, that could be cool. Maybe shoot for a really story-entrenched Prestige Class if you enjoy the RP more than the crunch.

I can suggest a lot of things more interesting than a half-orc barbarian designed to take damage, but it'd help if we knew what you have enjoyed in the past. Your preferences for martial, caster, arcane/divine, skill monkey, etc.

I have played a flame oracle gnome based on blasting and treasure hunting. I still play him simultaneously in a home game and pfs.

I have played an aid another drunken monk who was built around crane style and now forcefully retired due to errata (no feat can replace it effectively).

I played an overrun monk who used armor and charge through and vicious stomp to net lots of attacks a round against multiple foes. He hit really hard, too. He's been rebuilt into a bad touch monk sensei who stuns, fatigues, shakens and bewilders turn after turn after turn.

I made a gnome who was built around summoning demons and celestials and straddling both alignments. His eidolon was a Cerberus. Converting the theme to pfs failed and what I was left with was a bullrush eidolon and a pit spell summoner who uses a rod of wonder. Fun, but I miss the original concept too much to enjoy the watered down version.

I have a necromancer battle cleric of Urgathoa and absolutely fell in love with the darn class. He flirts with everyone and is great fun. But I cannot play him as he was built with teamwork in mind and my teammate lives out of town. We agreed to resume our shenanigans only when he is in town to play.

This leaves me with my last inspirations mentioned above. The barbarian isn't designed just to take damage. He's designed to take multiple character death damage and still be completely fine. Surviving to -30 con, self healing, fast healing (with a serious kick), shattering the ground and maybe another couple of cool things. He was going to be a pain taster but that doesn't look like it will fit. Needs too many feats as is.

What I don't like playing (generally) are cookie-cutter builds or concepts that people think are the best when it really isn't true or is in doubt. Ie- the bad touch monk was made to blatantly disprove the theory that in order to tank, you have to do great DPs. I knew for a fact that this was not true. Optimizers kept telling me otherwise. I built my monk and intentionally designed him to do 0-1 DPs and still tank (btw, he tanks just fine).

So I am probably all over the place. I would have played an Aasimar oracle whose entire goal was to have a horse stronger than anyone else in the party and who was emotionally and verbally abusive to his 'human servant'. The rp is great but the mechanics are gone in pfs. I like having a good mechanical (but different than normal where applicable) chassis to work from.

Wayang Invulnerable Rager Urban Barbarian?

Look at these guys.

Creepy little buggers.

You want to be inspired, how about an investigator?

Half-orc (or human) Str based empiricist investigator that does non-lethal damage with the Bludgeoner and Enforcer feats.

BBT, is that a wayang?

The new races aren't gripping me.

Half orc invulnerable ranger may beat out Captain America. The cap build is pretty far from complete thanks to the new brawler class.

Right now I have-

Golgathamir, the Immortal
Half-Orc Invulnerable Rager 8/LoreWarden 2/Pain Taster/Anything 1

Race Traits: City-Raised, Shaman's Apprentice, ~Skilled.
Str 16,Dex 14,Con 19,Int 10,Wis 7,Cha 7.

Rage Powers
2.) Lesser Celestial Totem
4.) Renewed Vigor
6.) Ground Breaker
8.) Regenerative Vigor

Feats
1.) Endurance (Race)
1.) Diehard
3.) Fast Healer, Ferocious Tenacity (Fighter Bonus).
4.) Combat Expertise (Lorewarden Bonus), Stalwart (Fighter Bonus).
5.) Deathless Initiate
7.) Raging Vitality
9.)

No Idea:
Extra Rage Power: Superstition? or Godless Healing or Power Attack, or Whip Mastery, Bolster Resilience or Great Fortitude?

Give me something cool I can do.

11.) Improved Stalwart.

Traits
Threatening Defender-Combat
?

Concept:
City-raised half-orc seeking to get in touch with his heritage seeks out a barbarian tribe and speaks with their shaman. The shaman agrees to teach him about his lost culture and heritage but what the character doesn't know is that he is considered weak and an outsider. The shaman and tribe put him through merciless tasks as our hero struggles to find acceptance that will never come. When our protagonist finally performs the public ceremony for his ascension into the ranks of the tribe, he is publically humiliated instead and informed that he will never be one of their kind. The shamans curse him that he shall wander all the land for enternity before finding a tribe that will accept him as one of true orc blood.

Since that day, shamed and alone, our hero Golgathamir, has never lost a fight, never found the peace of death and has grown to believe the shamans curse was real; that he is immortal. He seeks now to find a foe with the might to end his suffering, to die in glorious battle, but as yet he can not die.

This is all I have so far. Anyone got something better or refinements?

PS @Blackblood, I have an Aasimar and tiefling with exp on them at level 1. Mine are legal should I choose to use them.

I am really not feeling investigator at all for long-term play. Maybe as a one-shot. Slayer might be more provocative, though.

A Half-Orc Empiricist Investigator sounds really cool.

Also, a Tiefling Stygian Slayer with Nightmare Fist sounds cool.

I considered half-orc for mine, but as a human I can get Bludgeoner and Enforcer both at level 1. So not only am I doing a little damage and bringing massive skill utility, up I'm also debuting all of the monsters I hit.

The Pathfinder Wayang race is taken from Indonesian Wayang puppet theatre. This is the same culture that gave us the Silat martial arts styles, which are sometimes represented in Wayang theater (Youtube).

Ok, what about a lesser spirit totem based barbarian? You know, spice up the class a little.

Now we have charismabarian who does dpr through hitting adjacent enemies. It is possible the skald or one of the new classes is strongest here or perhaps a prestige class or multiclassing option. Essentially, you're getting a spiritual weapon for adjacent targets whenever you rage. Seems like a potentially interesting avenue to explore.

PS. Magda, that was an interesting read and some informative videos I saw after following your links. :)

Spirit Totem Fated Champion Skald is cool.

Full on Half-Orc, singing to spirits of battle, to aid him, and his allies.

Sounds, really cool, actually.
