Playing Skull & Shackles add-on characters without the add-on deck

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

It's clear now that we will not be able to receive the add-on deck with our S&S base sets. I'm just wondering, since all the character sheets are available for download, if there are any cards in the add-on deck that are essential for the characters that are included in that deck, or if we can play those characters using the downloadable character sheets without worrying that they will be gimped from not having the add-on boons mixed in.

I'm sure there are boons unique to the addon deck (just like ROTR), but I don't think there would be anything to bar you from using an addon character since we have the character sheets. Only exception is that I heard there was an additional rule for making a starting Ranzark (although I don't see it anywhere, something about leftover cards).

As long as you are playing with four or less characters, they will all function. However, they may not all function as well as possible. Oloch the Warpriest will probably work just fine.

As for the other three characters, the Add-on Deck (based on the Deck List in the PDF pack) provides a number of extra alchemical items (for Damiel) and animal allies (for Feiya and Lini). Some of these are only available from the Add-on Deck like Alchemist's Fire, Blast Stone, and Noxious Bomb which Damiel will likely miss dearly; and Dodo, Fox (Feiya's signature familiar), and Snow Leopard (Lini's signature companion).

So yes, it's possible, but I personally won't be doing it if I have my Base Set before I have my Add-on Deck.

Look on the bright side - there are 47 non-S&S-character-add-on characters available to play. :3

Not if you have no intention of buying the class decks. ;)

You can still use the character sheets like you were just talking about...

And not anyway, since the class decks aren't out yet either.

Oh...right. I didn't realize they were available for download, yet. :p

Did more character decks come out while I wasn't looking?

ROTR 11
S&S 11 + Ranzark (12)
Character Decks 7 * 4 = 28

My headcount currently is 39 non S&S characters and 51 characters total.

There are 47 characters and 4 more in the S&S character add-on.

You didn't miss any characters, you just missed a detail in my post.

Essentially, with Ranzak being a scavenger, he doesn't have a starting deck list but instead builds his starting deck from the basic cards that are left after all other players have built there deck.

Since the starting decks are often not optimal, this isn't really too much of a problem. It can lead to a slightly slow start if you have a lot of other players using Dex based weapons, but Ranzak doesn't really need to trouble himself with fighting anyway if there is another character at his location.

Sovereign Court

We played a 4 man last night with 4 S&S characters - Valeros, Seltyiel, Alahazra, and Oloch (love his display ability!). We built the the base set characters first and then Oloch, all using the suggested decks. The three base sets obviously had no issue. Oloch was missing his boarding pike and boarding axe though,no big deal. Not much choice in replacements though, there were only 3 basic weapons left to choose from. All in all though,it played perfectly fine.

Cool. Thanks, guys! I guess I could have answered my question by checking the deck list PDF...but that would have been too easy. ;)

Just got mine from a local store last night (gonna have a copy to resell after labor day :D). Haven't looked at the other characters, but Damiel's missing a bunch of alchemical boons. Alchemist's Fire, Noxious Bomb, and Blast Stone I think are the three. We subbed in two blast stones from RotR, so he had those, but I'm not even sure what the others do, so I have no idea what I'm missing. I imagine they're at least a little more potent than an d4, or at least differently so.

For now, even missing whatever explodey powers he should have, Damiel seems neat and recharging potions feels practically transgressive. We got a Potion of Healing in the first scenario and I thought "w-wait a minute, I can use this as many times as I want!"

Sovereign Court

Yup, practically an autorecharging Cure :)

I don't know about Noxious Bomb, but someone posted Alchemists's Fire in these forums and it was particularly... badass

Yeah, I've wanted an alchemist since I saw how good potion of healing would be if it went back in the deck instead of the box. :)

I'm looking forward to playing Damiel mostly because of Tot Flask, but also because it'll be fun to actually use potions for once. I might even give him an auto-pass-certain-check potion for one of his weaker skills, since he can do other things with his potions if they're not useful at the time.

I found Alchemist's Fire on here and realize I've basically been playing gimped without it. Holy crap! I also remembered Potion of Lucubration is another of the missing ones, but I don't think the loss of that is affecting me too much. I don't think we've actually rolled a craft check yet in three adventures? Maybe one to close a location (but I think the villain might've been there).

Orbis, I know you're no fan of potions, and neither am I. Multiple times I've thought "man, I really wish I had that potion of glibness in my deck," especially considering Damiel's d4 Charisma. I feel like I'm betraying a part of myself even thinking that.

Here is Noxious Bomb

Spoiler:
Noxious Bomb
Liquid Attack Poison Ranged Alchemical Basic
Intelligence Craft 5
For your combat check, banish this card to use your Dexterity or Ranged skill + 2d6. You can additionally discard another card to add your Craft skill; after playing that card, succeed at a Craft 9 check to recharge that card instead of discarding it.

Oh, it's just a poison instead of fire traited Alchemist's Fire.

I think they're cool with Damiel; on him they're basically attack spells. Between those and two non-combat spells, he is pretty much a spell caster.

I didn't like them in general in RotR. Exceptions can occur with expansions.

Damiel's ability to use potions for other things, recharge them if he does use them for their own ability, and the Tot Flask all add up to make me consider one or two check-specific potions with him.

Just like how I'm tentatively hopeful for armor on a couple of characters (still no more than two per deck!) after hearing about the buckler gun.

I don't feel that way with Damiel and potions because he's specifically designed to make them playable.

But potions with someone else would make me feel that way. And I would also feel that way when considering armor if I was doing it for the sake of armor (I am pretending buckler gun is just a weapon lol).
