Item with Paragon Surge effect

Advice

Hi everyone.

I have a question. My half-elf summoner is getting around that time when he has lots of free funds to spend, and I found this very fun spell some time ago, Paragon Surge.

Now say one would try and make a cloak of continuous paragon surge. This is where I find it hard to grasp the real pricing and an effect of such an item.

Say it's just user activated, then it's 5x3x2000=30k. A standard action and I have 5 minutes to use the ring. Not bad, good to get a spell I need or a bonus to a particular skill, or a combat feat.

But what about continuous effects, if I want a craft feat for a day or two? By logic 5x3x2000x2=60k. But at the same time, will I be able to change the feat effects? Pricing 60k for just 1 feat is a bit too much since most other feat-granting items cost around 10-15k.

So how would it work? What do you think?

Bump.

I believe somewhere it's been specified that when using Paragon Surge for extra arcana or similar exploit you always end up with the same spell during that day.

Here it is:

Quote:

Half-Elf, paragon surge: Can I cast paragon surge multiple times in a day to gain different benefits?

No. The first time each day that you cast paragon surge, you must select a feat and make all the associated choices that come with it. Once that choice is made, it is set for the day and additional castings must make the exact same decisions.

Sorry, but they closed that loophole a while back.

So honestly, it's not a very good idea. At best you might make a one per day item, because it's probably not going to be useful to you more than one per day since subsequent castings in the same day will result in recieving the exact same benefit as before.

Pricing is determined more by what the item does, than what spell gets you there. The spell formula is fine if you have no idea and are just getting started, but when you are done you have to look at the power of the item and compare it with other items.

Even with the much needed nerf to Paragon Surge, it is a pretty powerful effect. Choosing any feat you qualify for each day is a lot better than just getting one feat in a magic item. This is where DM call comes in, but I think being able to choose a feat each day is worth at least 60k.

Still, the question was, how will this thing work. I select the feat once a day and it's active until I drop it, or once and that's it. If once a day, I'd go for that, it will still be useful with my limited spell selection.

The DM more or less said yes to the concept of such an item, and the price is great enough to grant such an effect. but he will ask the same questions about how it would act when used, and would look for other peoples opinions on to how would such an item work.

It's really for you GM to decide exactly how it will work since pricing and restrictions are merely guidelines. There are both continuous use items, and activated items. I considerd this to be a use activated item, not a continuous effect one.

Personally, if I were the GM I would rule that you can have it as a X times/day (but you still get the same benefit each time it is used in that day) and using this pricing:

X/5*spell level*caster level*2000gp

So for 1 time per day it would be 1/5*3*5*2000 = 6000 gp, lasting for 5 minutes (caster level 5 is minimum).

But then looking at it that price, I think it's too cheap. So I would probably double it. So 12,000 gp. And then it's still a bargain.
