If I'm buying rhinohide armor, can I pay the extra to make it darkleaf cloth?
"This +2 hide armor is made from rhinoceros hide."
"Darkleaf cloth is a special form of flexible material made by weaving together leaves and thin strips of bark from darkwood trees, then treating the resulting fabric with special alchemical processes."
So, no. Entirely different materials, not a magical enhancement on one or the other.

By default, specific magic items can't be modified. No changing materials, enhancing bonuses, and the such.
That being said, ask your dm.
That is simply not true. By default specific magic items CAN be changed. But it is a lot more difficult to price specific magic items, which is why you should ALWAYS talk to your GM before even starting the process. I will end this by saying that I have full respect for GMs who choose to disallow changes to specific magic items, but that doesn't mean that it is default.

Yeah, you can play it like that (I am not sure which way is RAW, but you can whatever in a home game)....
But this is rhinohide armor. Not having rhinohide in it seems ingenuous. And since the magical item asks for rhinohide specifically, as well as thematically, one could argue that it is important for the armor and its magic.

"What are you boiy? Are you one o' 'em hippy druids? Wanna' buy faux rhinohide? Wanna go 'animal friendly' on the armor that lets you bum rush people better? Eh? That is how it is, boiy? I knew 'em girly magic classes would take the man outta you. I shoulda never let your ma take you to 'em. Now I want you to get out there, and kill up 50 rhinos and skin 'em if you want that armor. Now git!"

There are no rules that disallows editing/adding/changing specific magical items. That means the general rule of being able to customize magical items would stand. By RAW you absolutely can modify specific magic items.
BUT!!! Whenever you modify/customize any magical item you need GM approval, and that would apply to specific magical items aswell, and since the specific items are harder to figure out the pricing of, it is fair for any GM to disallow it.I also agree with you that darkleaf rhinohide seems weird, and I might disallow that specific modification simply because it doesn't fit thematically.
