Alrighty…
I've built two characters, one Synthesist and one Barbarian. My plan is for the Barbarian to mount the Synthesist, do stupid amounts of damage, and ride off into the sunset.
I'm planning on taking leadership… Here's my conundrum, who should be my own character, and who should be my cohort? I'm completely on the fence on this one.
Essentially, which build is more valuable to be higher leveled in a party.

I would pick the synthesist personally because I love the evolutions but it sounds like the synthesist isn't as important. what would decided it for me is if the mounted rage powers could affect the synthesist. if that's the case pick the barbarian cause that's hilarious
Is there any reason for your Barbarian to be particularly charismatic? If not, then the Synthesist obviously needs to be the leader. Besides, it is the Barbarian and not the Synthesist who is more likely to have enough hit points to make up for being two levels behind the rest of the party.

Eh, I am sure he could do well with an intimidate/cornugon smash, which could very well use a decent CHA.
But "decent" is well short of "through the roof" -- and the latter only makes sense for the Synthesist.

Me thinks I'll go Synthesist
Synthesist capstone > Barbarian Capstone. We are playing to 20. However, I can share rage with mount. Stiiiiill conflicted!
If you can share rage with mount then I'd go with barbarian.
It's more easily justified that your character allows his cohort to ride him, than the other way around.
