DM Beckett, I would definitely agree that running 5-99: The Paths We Choose would be far easier, but it not an interactive special. It is also playable in a regular game day.
That being said, it is a lot of fun. I played it at Gen Con, and have run it once. I can definitely run this one for the game day, if needed.
6-00: Legacy of the Stonelords would require some timing events. This was handled by hand-signals at Gen Con, but could be done by posts to a "control thread", and then the over-seer texts (etc) could be added to each thread by cut-and-paste. I'd be interested in trying that out.

My phrasing was perhaps a bit wrong: I just meant GM that keep up a consistent posting rate of a couple of posts per day (the benchmark being roughly a combat round per day, give or take). That still gives plenty of room for good roleplaying. Or what Beckett said.
I was talking about 6-00/Stonelord Legacy (the interactive special), not 5-99/The path we choose (the one with the factions).
I know of one occasion where a special was run on the board (GM Feral coordinated it).
These specials have timing notes (x minutes for this encounter, y minutes for the next), which in board terms would translates into x days of posting, assuming that a typical scenario runs z weeks (Jesse's survey information will be very useful here).
I'm assuming that there's quite a bit of GMs out there who have an average completion time of 5-6 weeks - no rushing involved, that's just how long it takes. Take those GMs, and a group of dedicated players.
Let's say we take 8 weeks, then four hours would correspond to two weeks/14 days. Each five-minute block listed in the scenario would be 2 days (and you'd have 2 days of slack).
It's tricky, but not trickier than running it in a crowded convention hall :)
|
With respect to timed events, just remember this "Gameday" is running over Christmas and new years, a time when lots of folk are away from their normal places and have different commitments than normal.
You would need to think through some things like this, and when weekends fall etc to ensure things worked well. Oh and lets not forget timezones (not that I am in a difficult timezone you understand...)
|
First off all, I think a special would be awesome ;)
And if we start November 1st and keep a tight pace (the first 5-6 weeks mentioned), I think we could finish before the holidays.
Maybe even run some sort of experiment and try 2 (different?) specials.
One planned for a max of 6 weeks for dedicated players
And another one stretched out over the entire 3? month gameday, with time of for Holidays
So people can choose which one they prefer? Or try out both and see what they like better.

Agreed, survey information will be. So much so that there may need to be a few more game days and maybe a practice run or two (not tied to the game day).
also dotting as I will be happy to GM PbP again :)Someone mentioned the holiday season, and that should include RPGSS which is a huge hit load on the boards and on many of our times ;)

The chat room is something we have included in the last couple of events, but not the last VTT Game day due to some limits on resources that day.
As far as games not going off, that was not the case at all. We ended up with more games running than we actually had originally submitted. I think there were a couple of pick-up games that got started late, but that happens.
I heard for the last VTT there were a lot of games not going off. The VTT game before that had a chatroom for players looking for players, and that seemed to work pretty well.

Specials for PbP is something we are still working on.
The issue with a special in the PbP format is that:
* All PbP tables will have to be kept in synch, meaning that all GMs will need to keep their tables going at the exact same pace.
* The pace would have to be brisk to mirror the pace and pressure of a "Real Time" Special.
* The start and finish dates/times, and the finish of each Act of the special would have to be hard set and synced for all tables.
* Players, and obviously GMs, would have to stay closely involved in the action with short post cycles during the time of the special.
* Broken tables would become a bigger issue than they normally would if the special fell below 5 tables at the finish. (The minimum table limit for most of the special, but not all of them.)
* GMs would have to be quick to report successes back to the Overseer GM, and the Overseer GM in turn would have to be quick to update all the tables as statuses and events occur, Acts End, et cetera.
* While one GM could also operate as the Overseer GM as well as a table GM, that is probably not ideal if that GM has other things going on at the same time. So the Overseer GM would want to make sure there are no other conflicts during that time.
All that said, right now, 6-00 is not approved for run in the PbP format by Campaign Leadership, and it will likely not be included in this PbP Gameday.
We will look at doing a Special in the next one though, if approved by Campaign Leadership.
PbP gameday 3 starting November 1st.
If we can gather a couple of swift GMs (those that finish games within 5-6 weeks), along with daily (or faster) posters, I think there is a good chance to pull off a special. I'd certainly be game for running one.
Seeing as how PbP gamedays are the only 'convention' some people have access to, it would be nice way to include these people. I'd love to have a go at 6-00!

@Jesse,
In my experience, this is a huge problem. I'm going to tell you things that are self-evident:
1. Players and GMs are all over the board when it comes to ability and speed at which people can post. I've gotten through a scenario in two weeks and then had another take three months.
2. This problem is exasperated due to the length of the PbP. The longer any particular game goes on, the greater the likelihood someone will not be able to post for whatever reason (work, kids, school, health, vacation, holidays, etc). This slows the game down even more and can cause even more delays.
3. Players will commit to a speed of play with both good and suspect intentions, and not be able to keep up, for whatever reason.
If PbP is going to try and undertake Specials, then I really think you need to vet your GMs and players in some way or capacity. What I'd hate to see is you open this up to everyone and then it becomes a huge fiasco and Paizo pulls the plug on Specials for PbP.
Or...
You set brick wall milestones for the games. If the party hasn't achieved X...by this date, the group is dropped and all players at that table are pulled from the Special. And yeah, that might mean you might have less than 5 tables if the Special were really long.

If you do, let me know and maybe we can break up what Factions we run (in hopes of getting the right players in to the right game).
I'm kind of keen on Silver Crusade and Taldor, (maybe also Andoran), just because that's the majority of my characters, (but if you are interested, willing to work it out).
I'm not speaking with any official capacity here, but I would assume we would get 2-3 weeks notice to be able to recruit officially, so I would expect to hear some word in a week or so. Just keep checking the Pathfinder Society Grand Lodge Online Play thread for something that will probably look like "PFS PbP Game Day 3 ___________".
I usually try to blast it on some of the more common PbP sign ups here too, so if you are involved there, you might get the word.
|
Where does the recruiting for the PBS day take place? I've been thinking about playing in a PBS since I check the forums on a very regular basis and would enjoy playing pathfinder.
Here is the thread you are looking for. If you want an official game day thread you are going to need to keep an eye out for PFS PbP Game Day 3 threads as Beckett already pointed out.

One of my suggestions on the survey was the long wait time between mustering players and the start of the game day. My offerings tend to fill up within hours of being posted...to tell my players that they have to wait a month (or longer) to kick down the first door is cruel and unusual punishment!
That and players may end up dropping the game to go play something sooner.
|
|
I meant a list where you can state your interest in the PbP gameday as a GM/Player and then be emailed that it starts, with the threads for GM´s and Players to apply.
Since many are watching out for it, but many also seemed to have missed it. This board is a lively place, looking at the wrong time and you might not see the thread.
Guess this way there could be even more games.

I think I actually suggested the opposite, giving 1-2 (or maybe 2-3?) weeks notice for GM's, so they could review and interact with their players before hand, prep better, and be able to discuss what they expect and what sort of programs and styles they use.
I think it comes down to if you already have a pre-established group waiting for the game vs getting random players. Not saying you are wrong, just I had a different experience, and would rather have extra time than not enough for what I'd hope.

For the 3rd PbP Game Day...
You can get a list of games here: http://pbpgameday.com/ (once games are submitted)
GMs should submit thier games here: http://ironhelixx.com/pbpgameday3/pbpgameday3.html
I will create a separate post with more details tomorrow when I get home.
We'll need to start getting GM games submitted so we can get you guys your scenarios early enough.
|
It may be too late, but a suggestion would be to have a flag on the games being played page that shows when recruitment is full - so people don't waste time going and looking at tables they won't be able to get onto.
My Slave Ships of Absalom filled up really fast.

I took the liberty of opening a thread for PbPGD3 recruitment on the paizo boards, modelled after the Flaxseed lodge.
The link is here.
The intention is to put up a spreadsheet where GMs can list their games, and players can sign up. That way players can - with a quick glance - find out which of the games are still accepting players.
Other GMs are cordially invited to use the signup as well, if they think it is useful. As of now the spreadsheet is not up, but I will link it once Jesse has sent around the details for the Gameday.

I just wanted to make sure I didn't miss it. I was holding off to post games yet because I wanted to make sure on a few things first, (still 2 games limit for instance).

I´ll be running #6–04: Beacon Below and #6-07 Valley of Veiled Flame, but the last one isn´t out yet nor on the submission list so i´ll submitt that later probably^^
If there is not enough demand for the higher levels, i can do whatever lower level scenario too.

I will add the tiers to the game list at http://pbpgameday.com later - it is already in the works
I signed up for two (ack do I really have that much time!?)
Jesse (or Kludd) can the spreadsheet have tiers added to it? I will be especially helpful if it is something all player's recruiters will see.Thanks.
