Is it possible to use more than 1 stone and thereby store several 1st level spells? Or is it necessary to get a non cracked version, and not use the ability to store a higher level spell?

There is no stacking, so you can have as many as you can afford. Each is its own action to activate though. This is really no different than having multiple potions.
