Mysteries for a PFS Oracle of Wadjet

Advice

Liberty's Edge

My wife is thinking about making an Oracle worshiping Wadjet for PFS, but is not sure what Mysteries are appropriate.

According to The God and Goddesses of Ancient Osirion, her domains are Good, Law, Protection, Travel, and Water and her "areas of concern" are Good serpents, the River Sphinx, and wisdom.

First, am I correct that deity and mystery associations are recommendations and not hard and fast rules? Second, what would be good mysteries for Wadjet?

That's correct, you can make an atheist oracle if you wanted to or worship the god from the elemental plane of cold and water and have the flames mystery.

Time, Waves, Battle, Ancestor. You could also ignore the deity entirely and go for something like Lunar or Lore if you felt like it.

So I've been thinking about this a bit. If your read up on the actual wadjet, you should play up snakes and protective aspects, and de-emphasize water. I can't think of a good combo that gives you a snake, though.

I was thinking Oracle of Battle with the Enlightened Philosopher Archetype and maybe Eldritch Heritage (Arcane or Serpentine) to eventually grab a snake as a familiar would be highly thematic.

As an example of an oracle who doesn't worship the goddess who provided his power, I have a PFS battle oracle who thought he was cursed by devils for most of his life, because he has the tongues curse that makes him speak Infernal in battle and times of stress. He actually hated the gods in general for allowing him to be cursed, and would constantly swear in disrespect to them, despite having a lawful alignment in all other ways. Because he wanted to be a warrior, he only trained in combat and tried to ignore his magical gifts, but Iomedae wisely gave him spells and revelations that were too useful to ignore, so he kept using them, despite thinking they came from an evil source and not actually wanting to be a spellcaster.

It wasn't until level 4 that he finally decided that since the magic was here to stay, and seemed to be growing more powerful, he may as well do some research to learn how to use it well. That's when he trained spellcraft and knowledge (religion) for the first time, and discovered that his curse actually comes from Iomedae. He also trained knowledge (history) for the first time while learning about her life as a mortal paladin before becoming a goddess.

He's still mad at her for cursing him and getting him banished from his home village, but some part of him realizes that she's generally good and noble, and that he'd probably greatly respect her under different circumstances. And though he won't admit it, he realizes that she made him a more powerful warrior for good with this curse, even though he hates it. So he'll come around and eventually accept her as his patron, but for now, it's still a love/hate relationship. I have him occasionally swear at her in Infernal, especially during combat ("Damn you, you sacred b!~~!, for making it impossible for me to communicate with my companions to coordinate our attacks during battle!").
