-First, I've been drinking
-I've lived in Asia for almost 7 years now, and before that hung out in Russia for another year. I'm almost 30. I speak Russian badly, Chinese worse, and am American (A merkin as you'd funny Brits say when you're taking the piss)
-I'm convinced that the government of this country which is famous for its Pandas is not only insane but evil incarnate. I teach students whose parents have enough money to bribe their way into Harvard but who lack the English skills to understand the fine moral arguments of "Beauty and the Beast"
-The men and women over 40, who remember certain events of 19--89 in private tell me of their horror of the young people in this country. "They only care about cars houses and money."
-The country considers Japan to be a military threat to East Asia but has fought more border wars than any country in modern time.
-It bankrolls North Korea
-It doesn't allow Muslims under 18 to attend Mosque
-It has a Noble Peace PRize winner in Prison
-It doesn't recognize self-defense as a legal principle. Recently an Australian man was attacked INSIDE HIS HOME in front of his CHINESE WIFE and he broke a man's arm. He was deported after a prison sentence
-Its fishing fleets violate all rules on fishing...and poach turtles
-It consumes Ivory, shark fins, turtle shell and other endangered species
-It intentionally sleep deprives students and makes them spend 2 weeks marching around screaming slogans while wearing military uniforms, but doesn't teach them to shoot.
-It has stolen Russian and American military secrets (see Kaspersky Spear Attacks) and the recent case in the USA
-It refuses to abide by the UNCLOS saying that it doesn't apply to China, which is a member OF THE UN and a security council member.
-It has the second largest economy in the world...and people bend over backward to deal with it.
-Look what ever the US did to you (Chile, Iraq, South Korea) you can not imagine the horror of a world where China has the power to control life and death. They kill their own people. The students here think Japan has nuclear weapons, and that North Korea is a "Strong Country". Somethins is wrong here.
-I don't care where you are from, but this is Munich. The world must stop it now before somebody gets hurt. I don't know how this is done...but on the anniversary I wanted to make a point.
-Forgive but never forget...

I read somewhere that there are an estimated 500 strikes, riots and/or protests every day in China. The article didn't say, though, who was doing the estimating.
Comrade workers of China: Never forget the martyrs of Tiananmen! Oust the Princelings! For workers revolution!

I clearly remember the days leading up to the Tienanmen Square massacre of students and other demonstrators. I recall saying how I wish I could join them, and my wise parents shaking their heads and warning me that such events often ended badly.
I remember their Statue of Liberty and tractors and speeches and everything. I also remember the lights going out and the sound of shooting and screaming. Somewhere in the back of my head, I can still hear the fear in the reporters (Ted Koppel?) voices as they described the scene.
As an adult, I became a pro-democracy protester myself. When I here the sounds of people getting violently arrested I get the same sick feeling- there is just something unique in the screams of people being abused by their "own" government that seems universal. But for the chance of being born when and where I did, my friends and I would have been the ones getting shot, ran over with tanks, and later executed for our "crimes".
I have always been thoroughly disgusted not just at the actions of the Chinese government, but also at the greedy scumbags in my own government who rewarded them with favored nation trading status and allowed companies like WalMart to become little more then importers of products made by a nation of exploited workers. If they gave a quarter shit about democracy they would have banned Chinese imports, and while US might have lost our manufacturing, at least Mexico would be doing well...
George Bush Sr. can go to hell for his support of the Chinese Government, as can those sleezey Arkansas (home state of WalMart) lawyers Bill and Hilary Clinton. Since almost no major politician including Obama has made a damn peep about Tienanmen Square, they can go to hell as well. *
Buy American
Buy Fair Trade
Free Tibet
Support your local Goblin protesters!
*Special Ronald Reagan can go to hell mention for his support of Wingnut religious types at home and abroad (jihadists), Contras, Iran's govt, Saddam Hussein, South Africa, and others...
EDIT: But as for the thread title, you are crazy if you are going back to China and not hiding your identity somehow.

China had some very good teachers in modern imperialism/capitalism... Both from the west and Japan... The millions of dead Chinese the humiliation at the hands of "barbarians" and the generally shitty way china was used as a chew toy is going to leave some massive collective psychological baggage.
China believes it has something to prove, and like most "imperialists" it has it's own "Menifest Destiny", driven by its belief in its own superior race and culture myth. Just like the US, Europeans, Russians, Japanese and English.
They are going to shake things up in the next 10 years.
My advice is "Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

To the OP: you sound like you're in a place you absolutely do not like. If at all possible, GTFO. Start working on a plan. Life's too damn short to waste putting up with crap that makes you miserable.
Nothing against China, whatever, I know nothing about it except from television and I'm sure everything on t.v. is true. Maybe....it's just not your bag.
(I almost said cup of tea).....
