Additional Resources - bring an extra iPad?

Hi there,

I happen to have two iPads now and was wondering if I could legally bring the second loaded up with all my official Paizo PDFs and GoodReader and give that to the GM for use to satisfy the requirement to bring the books or printouts for any Additional Resources used. (I had the mini but turns out I prefer a larger screen.)

It seems to meet the spirit of the rules, but from reading plenty of other posts here I know that the spirit is not necessarily the letter of the rules and so I'm asking. :)

Thanks!

As long as the .pdf is watermarked with your e-mail address (that is, the pdf is yours), then bringing it on the iPad is fine. You can bring the physical books, the watermark .pdf, or a printed copy of the watermarked .pdf. All of those count.

What you could not do, for example, is photocopy pages out of the book (even if you own it). The watermarked pdf, either in electronic or printed copy, will suffice.

Great, thanks. I wasn't sure about that so I will stop bringing print-outs and just bring the 2nd iPad with the (watermarked) PDFs. I'd loan the GM the 1st iPad but I have found the Hero Lab iPad app to be much easier than using the Hero Lab printouts for tracking most things!

Cheers!

I actually keep my Hero Lab and all my stuff on the same iPad. Only one item to carry, and it doesn't really impact me if I have to hand the iPad off to the GM for a minute or two.

You don't need the second iPad. As long as you have watermarked PDF's and can display the rules text when requested, you are good.

Here is the specific language from the Guide to Organized Play:

"In order to utilize content from an Additional Resource, a player must have a physical copy of the Additional Resource in question, a name-watermarked Paizo PDF of it, or a printout of the relevant pages from it, as well as a copy of the current version of the Additional Resources list. You must inform the Game Master that you plan to use Additional Resource material before play begins, so he has a chance to familiarize himself with the new material."

Since you can bring the name-watermarked Paizo PDF of it, it assumes you would so on an electronic device (otherwise, the part about bringing a printout would be unnecessary.)

So, put it on that iPad and bring it! Now, keep in mind that many places don't have space or items for you to charge our iPad during play, so if the battery dies or whatever and you can no longer refer to it or show it to the GM, that's a potential problem.

But the answer to the root of your question is yes, provided the .pdf meets the requirement above.

I have a name-wartermarked Paizo PDF of it - on the Paizo servers for download whenever I want. :) I would interpret that as fulfilling that requirement, which seems counter-intuitive, so that's why I asked this specific question.

(I also brought a USB flash drive with the files on it too, which also seems to fulfill this requirement in the potentially most useless way in the absence of anything to read the USB drive with.)

(Wouldn't it be great if Paizo had DropBox integration where your PDFs were always up-to-date in relevant folders and even had useful filenames instead of PZO273818.pdf? I had to write a script to unzip the files and rename them to something reasonable based upon the (still unreasonably long) ZIP filename.)

Thanks again.

In the interest of time, you should have the files already downloaded onto your device so that if the GM needs to see it, you don't have to wait (and woe if there isn't a good Wi-Fi signal when you need it!).

As to the flash drive comment, unless you have a device that can read it, the device can't possibly count, again because there is no way for the GM to read it to confirm whatever it is you are using.

One thing to remember is that this rule is not to prove you own the resource, but to make sure the GM, who may not be familiar with that particular item/rule/effect, has access to the original rules source for the item, so she/he can adjudicate it fairly.

True to an extent. It does not mean you can just stand up and scan the room looking for someone who has the necessary book, grab it, and show the relevant text to the GM. That would not meet the requirements, although it would allow the GM to reference the necessary rules.

See, however, this post, and the immediately following one by Mike Brock.

That makes it pretty clear that owning the resource in question is a requirement.

Remember to fully charge them before the start of the adventure.
Paper never run out of batteries, iPads do.

Yes, but the DM should not be the "give money to Paizo" police. Practically the rule should never realyl be brought up unless there are unfamiliar rules, or someone is harcore splatbook diving from everywhere. That is the take away message of jsut about every discussion about the additional resources rules.
