Karzoug Statue

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

The villain Karzoug Statue says he is immune to the Attack and Mental trait. As a spellcaster do I have no way to defeat him? All my spells are attacks, in addition to other elemental types.

I didn't see it addressed in the FAQ, or in a thread here yet.

Thank you.

Those immunities certainly limit your options as a spell caster. You can always attempt an attack with your bare hands, or something more effective that doesn't have traits he's immune to, if you have something like that in hand.

Yes spellcasters have trouble taking him on directly. You have to rely on another charactor to take him on.

If playing solo with a spell caster then you need to implement the rule about replacing a card you can't complete with an alternitive card.

My spellcaster has to settle for supporting from the wings with a blessing and haste spells to move others to the glutony location so they would have more cards to support the attacker with.

Alternatively most spellcasters have a none-attack spell way of fighting.
They can use weapons, or wands or other devices. If soloing you should really have something ready for this, as there are a fair few creatures immune to attack spells.

We just completed this scenario yesterday in a 2p game with Ezren and Kyra and found it to be a difficult encounter. We ended up defeating him with Ordikon's Staff, whcih lets you discard a spell to roll strength or melee die + 2D12.

You've got a few options:

1. A weapon. Only Seoni and Lini don't have one by default, and I suspect that by this point many people will have given Lini one (though not everyone). Regardless though, with her powers Lini still would be well off using option 2. If another character has an extra to spare (or you have Swipe), try getting a weapon to your weaponless caster during the scenario.

2. Use your Strength to punch him in the face. It doesn't have to the be face, but it does have to be your Strength. This is probably least ideal, but with enough blessings can work.

3. Use a "combat" item like Wand of Scorching Ray or something similar. These don't have the attack trait. They also aren't as strong as a spell.

4. If you know he's coming (Augury, Harsk, Spyglass), find a way to put one of the "cloud" spells into effect before you encounter him. His immunity prohibits you from playing the spell during his encounter, but if it is already in effect you still get the bonus dice.

5. Of course, if you know he's coming you can have someone else in the group deal with him.

Some of those things depend on your group makeup, if you find they aren't working, post your group and maybe you can get some more specific advice.

Link for reference? Cause that doesnt sound like it should work.

See this similar situation with the Scarecrow Golem.

Here is the immunity rule:

Rulebook v3 p10 wrote:
If the card you’re encountering states that it is immune to a particular trait, players may not play cards with the specified trait, use powers that would add that trait to the check, or roll dice with that trait during the encounter.

So that is 3 things:

Players may not play cards with the specified trait. If you played Toxic Cloud earlier, then you wouldn't be playing it during your encounter with Karzoug Statue, so that part wouldn't apply.

Use powers that would add that trait to the check. There is no power on Toxic Cloud that adds the Attack trait to the check, so that part wouldn't apply.

Roll dice with that trait during the encounter. The dice from Toxic Cloud have the Poison trait, but not the Attack trait, so that part wouldn't apply.

So it would work.

Hmmm. Clearly it does work. I still dont think it should. :P

Well, Karzoug Statue somehow prohibits you from playing those spells. But once it is played he can't do anything about the poisonous gas floating through the area. And he gets hurt by that.

It is sort of like Fiery Weapon not adding the Magic trait to the check. Yes, magic makes it get there, but once it is there the fire itself isn't magical.

Correction: that one won't work. They have the attack trait too. I was thinking too much about monsters that prohibit "spells with the attack trait", against which the wands work. But since Karzoug Statue's immunity is much broader, they won't work against it.
