Is the caster level equal to your HD?
I am wondering if the SLA from a varisian tattoo can qualify a character for the Arcane Armour Training feat, which has a caster level requirement.
I think I've read somewhere that the caster level for SLAs defaults to HD, but I can't find the ruling.
In a similar vein I am assuming that there is no reason you can't take spell focus and varisian tattoo feats without having levels in a casting class? (Whilst probably sub-optimal, doing so makes room for other feats later in a multi class build).

Sometimes.

The feat adds 1 to the CL of some spells. While the feat has Spell Focus as a prereq, that feat does not require you to be a caster, so you might not even have a CL.

Most SLAs gained by race use by HD/character level.
Most SLAs gained by class use class level. Some SLAs call out CL.
Not sure about SLAs on creatures with X HD that have CL Y.

If you meet the prereqs, you can take the feats.
Cheapest way to get a CL is to have a racial SLA. Next is a trait SLA that scales with level (I think there are two). Next is a feat that grants an SLA. Best is a caster class, but unless you stay with it, you will loose CL to HD due to multiclassing with other classes.
There are some traits that give a bonus to CL, as well as a magic item (Ious Stone).
