Pick and choose

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

How many out there pick and choose rules from PF.

For example, we use core, but currently I allow classes from the APG, but not many of the options (such as archetypes, Hero points, etc)...and allow some spells/feats and things from UC and UM along with classes, but there's a whole lot in there that I don't have in my games.

If using books outside of core, how many of you, if you use them, see those items as options (and utilize rule 0) and pick and choose which of the items presented in those books to use in the games?

In the game I currently play, we are allowed anything on d20pfsrd.com but we are not using Hero Points.

I go through each book and decide what, if anything, we will use from those books. Sometimes that list might vary with which campaign we're in at the time.

Liberty's Edge

I allow pretty much anything from any Paizo book...but not always precisely as-written, as my 8-page House Rules document attests.

I don't generally use Hero Points or other optional mechanics (words of power, piecemeal armor, etc.)

Sovereign Court

Surprised to see the hero point hate going on here. I always reserve the right to pick and choose rules when I GM. Currently gunslingers and summoners are out but not a whole lot else.

I don't hate Hero Points, I just don't usually utilize them.

I think everybody does this to some extent.

For me, 'core' isn't even off-limits for pruning. Notable CRB stuff I don't use includes alignment and prep-casting classes.

Nearly every campaign I run is home brewed and has its own rules, sometimes vastly different from one game to another.

Over the last 4 ish years using the pf ruleset I've ran a darksun game, carrion crown, a home brew mid level magic steampunk game and am currently running a homebrew elder scrolls game. I am considering a spell jammer campaign for my next game.

Each setting varies so greatly and my rule sets are very varied.

My only main rule consistency is if I allow firearms I use penetration rating rather than the stupid hitting touch attack rule.
