Lini Questions

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Sczarni

So I've begun my delve into the Character Add-On deck, decided to restart the box back to level one and bump Lini and Sajan up to the same level as my Harsk and his pals.

They are both incredibly awesome and their powers are nuts, but I have a few questions.

1) Does Lini's second power (the shapeshifty one) alter the kind of dice you're using? For example, if I'm making a Dexterity check and proc her second power, does it just become a Dexterity check with an increased dice size? Or does it just mean I roll 1d10 in place of it entirely? (I ask this because I'm running the spell Strength in her deck and in the near future she's going to have skill feats in Strength and Dexterity.)

2) I think I already know the answer to this one, but I want to clarify so I'm not cheating (XD); can you reveal an animal ally to proc her first power and then discard the same ally to proc her second power?

Thanks in advance!

1. It just changes the size of the dice. It is still the normal skill and any skill feats still apply. There is an explanation here.

2. Absolutely. In the case of her power she is using her power, she is not playing the card. So she is still free to play 1 ally card on the same check. That is because playing a card means activating the power on the card. Since for her "reveal to get a d4" power she isn't activating any powers on the ally card, she hasn't actually played an ally.

Thanks so much! :D

You are welcome. FYI: I added some info to explain my answers. Enjoy Sajan, I love playing him. (Got nothing against Lini either.)

She is hands-down the strongest character in the game at the moment. A lot of fun to play, too, and pretty thematic (Ezren also has a great theme going).

We found that Lini sometimes struggled with combat, especially when she needed the Magic Trait - Kyra and Lem tended to have taken most of the spells, but her +d4 for revealing an ally just made her so versatile - any location or monster with an irritating specific check, she was better placed than anyone else to adapt.

Lini + Eagle = unstoppable!

Lini + animal allies is simply the best closer in the game - I gave her a weapon early on for emergencies and has the good amulet (amulet of fiery fists, right?) just in case. She's got both Holy Lights and both Swipes up through Thassalonian Sins... in short, she does not lack for offensive strength and she is the best character in the game to tackle the wisdom/perception/survival checks as I'm rolling 1d10 + 1d4 + 9 to close out locations... she's pretty amazing.

If Lini has three animal allies, can she reveal all 3 for and extra 3d4?

No. You can only play the same card or activate the same power once per check or step.

The original post was a little confusing; just to clarify, I think when s/he says "second power" s/he means this one, which is actually Lini's third power:

Lini's card wrote:
You may discard a card to roll d10 instead of your Strength or Dexterity die for any check

At least it's third on my card. Likewise, on my card the reveal power is second, not first.

Also, I had to Google "proc"! For others who weren't sure, I'd read as "activate" in this case.

Since I was confused, I thought I'd share my own clarifications to myself!

No. You can only play the same card or activate the same power once per check or step.

So this text doesn't apply to said power?

Can I reveal two Belts of Incredible Dexterity over and over to add ∞ to my Dexterity?

Of course not. Any specific card's power can be activated once per check or step, and then it can't do that again until the next time you do something. So you cannot reveal a single Belt of Incredible Dexterity twice to add 2 to your Dexterity check, but you could reveal two copies once each; similarly, you cannot reveal a single Magic Shield three times to reduce a single instance of Combat damage dealt to you by 6, but you could reveal it once to reduce “before the encounter” combat damage dealt by a Scout, and then reveal it a second time to reduce Combat damage if you fail to defeat the Scout.

Resolution: On page 9 of the Rulebook, under Playing Cards, add the following sentence to the definition of Reveal: "You may not reveal the same card for its power more than once per check or step."

No, that rule doesn't apply to Lini's "reveal an animal ally power" because you aren't revealing it for its power, you are revealing it for her power. But these rules do apply:

Rulebook v3 p10 wrote:
Each player may activate any power no more than once during each step.
Rulebook v3 p11 wrote:
Remember that each player may not play more than 1 card of each type or activate any 1 power more than once during each check.

That is what prevents Lini from revealing 3 animal allies for 3d4. She can only activate her power once per step of the encounter and only once per check.
