The Cavalier Challenge

Advice

So I am currently building a human cavalier for a RotRL campaign. I'm coming in at level 5 with 6000 gold. I would like to have him focus on reach weapon and getting in multiple AoE. We are using the roll 4d6 for each stat and drop the lowest roll. I have rolled a 17, 16, 14, 13, 12 and 11. I also have my mind set on either Order of the Dragon or Order of the Sword. Other than that, I would some advice on how to optimize what I already have. The party I am joining consists of a 2-handed weapon fighting Paladin, a rogue who doesn't really know what he's doing, a gnome magus who is usually quite timid about actually jumping into harms way, and a dwarven druid who is focused on spell casting with a velociraptor animal companion. I would like my character to make them look good and keep us all alive at the same time. Any and all advice is appreciated!

Tandem Trip is potentially a good option for your Tactician ability given that you want to up your chances of AoOs and be a good team player. Works well with the reach thing also.

Order of the Sword is better for mounted dominance, while Order of the Dragon is pretty much the team player build, so if your goal is to be a supporting leader type of combatant, I'd probably go order of the Dragon. It sounds like your group is probably low to mid optimization levels, so Dragon makes for a solid choice in making them perform better while still being able to step into the fray or use your AoOs for damage and control. Having played through RotRL myself, there's enough situations where the mount can be awkward that I'd probably avoid Order of the Sword since that's really going to make you reliant on being mounted.

You could also consider the Order of the Staff from Knights of the Inner Sea given that you've got a good bit of spellcasting in your group. It combos up well for working in tandem with a Magus and could give some cool benefits for coordinating with the druid and paladin as well.

I think Order of the Dragon is awesome. It pretty much makes you go along with the party, but that's it, no outside allegiance. I think if you want to help your allies the Standard Bearer archetype with the feat Flagbearer will go a long way toward that. The lance is the obvious weapon for you, it is perfect for mounted charges and it functions as a longspear while dismounted.

I would avoid Sword. There will be times and places mounted combat is not an option. Dragon is very good, though.

Cockatrice is a surprisingly good teamwork order. The edicts are a problem to work around, but standard action dazzling display is great for casters since it pulls down saving throws and steal glory is good for generating AoOs for a reach/combat reflexes build.

Also, due to a screw up mismatching teamwork feat prerequisites with the tactician ability you probably want to dip one level of full BAB non-cavalier or two levels of less than full BAB non-cavalier before you take your ninth cavalier level. Coordinated Charge is a very strong feat for tactician.

Lantern Lodge

In Champions of Balance (I Think...might need to check) there's a Cavalier order that gives Step Up to both you and your mount and the ability to use Step Up while mounted. If you're looking to fish for AoOs and abuse reach weaponry to threaten extra area, it's a nice addition.

Woops, I meant to say my choices of Order were between Order of the Dragon and Order of the Shield.

I am also thinking of either going Strategist/Standard Bearer archetype combo or the Strategist/Honor Guard combo.

Dragoon is a really good 1 level dip for Cavalier to space things out so you can take Coordinated Charge without waiting an extra 7 levels. You get useful feats that you should probably pick up anyways, and if you take it as your second level you never even notice that you disrupted your progression.

I should have been more specific with my post. One thing I'm looking for is good feats that would work well with this build. If all else fails, I'll just go the Power Attack route, but I'm wondering if there is something better than that.
