Wizard costs for learning new spells

Rules Questions

Suppose I want additional spells, and I have no scrolls to copy them from. How much does it cost me to get more lvl 1 spells?

Do I have to buy a scroll and then pay 10 gp to write it in my spellbook? Or do I just pay the 10gp?
Or do I have to pay 1000 gp? According to the "Independent Research" rules.

You have to purchase the scroll first then pay the gold to copy it into your spellbook. The gold is for the preparation of arcane inks, etc.

Independent research would work too, but the price is entirely up to the Dungeon Master.

Of course the cheapest way would be to gain a level and get two new spells for free.

Orrrrr you could pay another NPC Wizard to gain access to their spellbook for half the cost to scribe the level of the spell plus the cost of scribing that spell. Seriously, buying scrolls is the sucker's way of getting new spells.

In most cases, wizards charge a fee for the privilege of copying spells from their spellbooks. This fee is usually equal to half the cost to write the spell into a spellbook (see Writing a New Spell into a Spellbook). Rare and unique spells might cost significantly more.

The 1000gp for "independent research" is if you want to make a completely new spell. Or if you absolutely can't find a source of the spell.

If you can find a scroll, that'll work. Or an enemy spellbook.

Alternatively, rent a spellbook from another wizard.

Note: Although it's not a big deal yet, once you can scribe 2nd and higher level spells, the blessed book is one of the best investments for a wizard. Cost of scribing 500 2nd level spells: 20,000 gp. Cost of a blessed book: 12,500 gp. And the scribing is free. It's even better for higher level spells. Basically, you pay 12.5gp/page for the blessed book. (And if you do a TON of this, consider the "cypher script" feat, which reduces costs/space requirements and also time.)
