Sandpoint History from a Locals Perspective

Rise of the Runelords

Part of my group is interested in figuring out how things work in town and who might have a reason for wanting to harm the town and it's residents.

Based on the goblin mentions of a longshanks & finding the medium humanoid tracks in the boneyard they convinced this is being caused by someone from Sandpoint that has something against it.

As a result of this they are trying to get as much information as possible on the history as well as politics of town to help with figuring it out.

I spent a lot of time at our last session looking through the book and trying to get them some answers with out totally giving things away, which only partially answered the questions and took up a lot of time during the session.

I was wondering if anyone has possibly put together a handout that would outline what they could learn by having a conversation with one of the NPC's such as the mayor, sheriff or Father Zantus?

I've been through the community thread but don't remember seeing anything.

Thanks

JD

I'm going to spoiler this just in case:

Spoiler:
If memory serves right there is an introduction to one of the chapters--sorry away from books--which basically gives the whole timeline of Sandpoint from its founding and the strife with the Varisians, its prospering and the late Unpleasantness; I'd say you as GM now have to decide who knows what and is willing to tell the PCs. I had the three NPCs you mentioned give the PCs slightly different versions of Sandpoint's history reflecting their perspective and to what they were/are private to. Mind, that Sherriff Hemlock and Zantus might actually know less then Kendra as they only came into office ~5 years ago. Kendra will definitly have an interest in playing things down as problems might fall back on her, being the current mayor and being a member of one of the founding families.

Also Spoilerized:

Your players have a keen grasp on the clues the AP has provided so far, JDragon. RuyanVe's right - both Hemlock and Zantus inherited their positions after the deaths of their predecessors during the Late Unpleasantness, so most of what they can tell the party would be incomplete. Hemlock would probably suspect the Sczarni, as they've been a thorn in his side ever since he took the position, but he'd be hard pressed to give a reason. After all, what's the profit in burning Sandpoint to the ground?

Zantus would probably have even less of an idea. Most of his time has been spent arranging for the cathedral's construction, and the fact that Father Tobyn's bones were stolen is probably more worrisome to him than the fact that a longshanks was working with the goblins. He probably has no idea why the bones were stolen, but he's sure it's not for anything good. Ironically, he's also the likely person to inform the party about Nualia, since she was Tobyn's adopted daughter.

Kendra has a clearer picture, but like everyone in Sandpoint, she's laboring under the perception that Nualia died in the fire along with her father. If she had to guess, she'd say that either Titus Scarnetti or Lonjiku Kaijutsu had something to do with the goblins. The Scarnettis have long schemed to be the ruling class in Sandpoint, and this might be some sort of angle for the office. As for Lonjiku, his absence was rather conspicuous. He was supposed to say a few words during the opening ceremonies, but he was ill that day. What if he wasn't? She also has no real motive for him, but she can't shake the feeling he's mixed up in it somehow.

Finally, there's Jubrayl. Assuming the PCs want to investigate the seamier side of Sandpoint, he could have some good info. I doubt he'd sell out Lonjiku, who he is paying off to use the glass furnaces to dispose of bodies, or Titus, who he's blackmailing after burning down several of the other lumber mills around the area, but he could verify that there are smuggler's tunnels underneath Sandpoint. He could tell them to start looking around Junker's Point, and they might find their way into the Glassworks by accident. That might be an interesting way to run Glass & Wrath! Oh, naturally, Jubrayl won't give out anything for free. Make the party work for it!
