Firstly, shouldn't this item be a +3? (or is each prong +1?) ;)
Secondly and more importantly Valeros just encountered a Simulacrum of Vraxeris.
I do not like him, no, not at all.
Failing the Wisdom 10 check I have recharged my hand and of course drawn the above mentioned trident as my one card
So, the question is as follows. Obviously I cannot discard another card so that first power of the trident is unattainable. However may Valeros discard the trident to add the d8+3 from its discard ability?
The phrase "you may additionally" to my mind connects the second power to the first so I am leaning towards no.

You definitely can't play it. See this post.
And the "additionally" part requires the first part to have been activated, just like any weapon that has the "additionally" text.

Kyra handily had a Blessing of Gorum available, so Valeros just strangled the annoying sod. And then with a further blessing closed the Festering Maze of Sloth. A single tear fell from my cheek at the amazing boons held within its putrescence. Oh well
Actually I wish more things like this would pop up. I like a challenge not a romp!

It's interesting that you find it difficult to cycle through Val's deck. All you have to do is use the discard power of your weapons, which allows him to recharge them instead, every time you fight. Combine that with the option most armor you should have at this point gives you to recharge instead of discarding them when you reset your hand, and his is one of the easier decks to cycle through.

Addendum he can also get stuck with too many weapons. Unless he is hitting combat encounters he explores one card per round.
In a 6 player game he gets 5 rounds max. Not too useful a hand in this circumstance.
That is one reason I like him to carry a longbow or two, even if he doesn't go with his Weapon Master role. It gives him a card to play on other player's turn. And he can recharge them via his power.
