Looking for Play by Post for Beginning players

Recruitment

I am really new to this so I do not know if asking this question is allowed, but does anyone know of a play by post that I could start to learn how to play pathfinders. I have the beginners box and my core rule book is coming soon, but I actually haven't played a real game with other players yet. It is mostly due to the fact that no one I know in real life will play the game. Can anyone help me?

Welcome to the game, Ryan.

Here's a handy guide I wrote that will give you a good idea of how PbP games work on this site.

Unfortunately, it won't help you learn the actual game. That pretty much takes jumping in and doing it.

You're in a bit of a Catch-22 situation, because most game recruitment threads involve players presenting their characters for the GM to select a party from. Only having the beginner's box at your disposal means that any character you make won't be "complete" by the standards of the full game.

My advice would be to build a character to the best of your ability, put a lot of work into the backstory to fully flesh out who your character is, and ask for help from the other people in the thread on how to fill in the mechanical blanks.

Most GMs want to see that you're a good writer with an interesting character first. System mastery is a pretty distant second.

If you want to get into a game, just check in here once a day or so and post a character concept when you see a new recruitment thread go up. In the mean time, you might want to practice making character aliases and making a few "blank" characters of the sort you think you might want to play. Make an Alias for them, come up with a name, and fill in as much of the mechanics as you can. Leave the backstory blank so that you can fill it in to fit the GM's story idea when you join a recruitment thread.

If you don't get into a game, don't get discouraged. Just keep trying.

Good luck!

Ryan - as DH said above, welcome to the game! Once you've got it figured out, you've got years of great fun ahead of you. Doomed Hero's points about putting real meat on the bones of your character are right on point, whether you're gaming with real-life friends around a table or playing in a Play-By-Post setting. There's another guide out there, that kind of builds on the basics of DH's guide, here.

Another thing you can do is try to get in Pathfinder Society (often called PFS) games - either at your Friendly Local Gaming Store or via PbP. If you make a character that works with the rules presented in the Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play, then you can just check these recruitment threads regularly, and if someone is recruiting for a PFS game, it's almost always first-come, first-serve. So if you're not super-confident in your ability to write a fascinating character sketch that will wow every DM who reads it, you can just jump into a PFS game and get a taste for it.

PFS tends to have people with a variety of different experience levels, so it's usually pretty welcoming of newcomers, because we all want more people to play the game.

Also - in addition to your core rulebook, you can look at the Pathfinder System Reference Document, which is an awkward name for a compilation of all the Pathfinder rules - there's gobs of information for building any kind of character you can imagine.
