When a summoner casts Enlarge Person on his eidolon, the verbal component is "Magic wand, make my monster grow!!"
Ugh, that was such a horrible choice for the localization. Changing a chant to the evil spirits of the earth into 'Wand [which isn't even a wand but a staff >_<] blah blah blah'

It became a thing, though.

Actually the definition of "wand" is not the way we think of them in D&D-circles, at least not entirely. It really does frequently refer to a staff of some sort, with the key element being that it's used by some sort of magician. Find a deck of tarrot cards and look at all the cards in the wands suit. They're all staffs. Also from Dictionary.com...
wand[wond] Show IPA
noun
1. a slender stick or rod, especially one used by a magician, conjurer, or diviner.
2. a rod or staff carried as an emblem of one's office or authority.
3. a slender shoot, stem, or branch of a shrub or tree.
4. a small applicator for cosmetics, usually having a brush at the tip: She applied the mascara with a wand.
5. U.S. Archery. a slat 6 feet (183 cm) by 2 inches (5 cm) placed at a distance of 100 yards (91 meters) for men and 60 yards (55 meters) for women, and used as a target.

Huh, interesting notes Ashiel. I'd already had the wand/staff division in my head before ever getting involved in D&D.
Wouldn't surprise me. A lot of stage magicians and such used small wands as part of their performances, which gets carried over into old cartoons and satires of them, and then spins from there. At least, that's how I'd guess if I was to bet on it. I'd imagine that it's a lot easier to preform slight of hand with a top-hat that a 4 ft. oak staff.

In DnD we have to have different terms for the different "magic sticks" of various lengths that do different things.
Practically speaking I see no reason why a "Pathfinder Wand" couldn't be made with a staff-length piece of wood, or a "Pathfinder rods" wouldn't be made the length and thickness of a wand, but then it's the same reason most vacuum cleaners have roughly the same shape: it seems to be the most practical for it's purpose, and people need to be ale to look at it and know straight away "Hey, that's a vacuum cleaner"

I tend to have magic items with semi-traditional uses in a variety of forms. One variation of wands and such that my brother really seems to love is the spellbook.
No, not that kind of spellbook. No, this spellbook is a bound tome and each page is a different wand that consumes one of the charges until the book's magic burns out. He is particularly fond of ones I price as x/day and have spells share charges. For example:
Manual of the Beast
Aura faint transmutation; CL 3rd
Slot -; Price 6,750 gp
== Description ==
This hide-bound book looks primitive though sturdy. Each page being made out of a thin vellum page that depicts some sort of animal in great detail, from ursine to viper, from squirrel to hawk. Each page has a unique arcane rune that somewhat resembles the animal on the page that seems to glow faintly.
This book has 1 charge per day. Each day it may be used to cast one of the following spells as a wand of that spell: bear's endurance, bull's strength, cat's grace, eagle's splendor, fox's cunning, or owl's wisdom.
== Construction ==
Craft Wand; bear's endurance, bull's strength, cat's grace, eagle's splendor, fox's cunning, and owl's wisdom; Cost 3,375 gp
