How does that work. I presume you can use it as a version of detect magic in a pinch, but only gives the bonus to identify on items 'in your possession'. The question is, can I set out 10 different items in my 30 foot cone, and scan them and identify them? In 3.5, I allowed identification of 1 item/round, but you had to handle it. Now you just have to emanate on it, I guess...

I once used a scroll of identify just to use the spell as a "detect magic" with a ninja to check for traps.
Funny how they stopped looking at me suspiciously for having this in my bag.
Edit: Wow, I just found out the duration isn't about concentration. You just have to stare at something to have informations... Interesting!

well, to make the spellcraft check, you have to 'examine it closely' - presumably touching?

Like TCG said (except also shorter duration) - you have to handle an item to identify it, so working in a cone (for either spell) doesn't change anything. Takes 3 rounds to identify btw (so 1 item per caster level).
This is correct.
And to add the source of '3 rounds to determine magical properties', it is right out of the spellcraft skill.

Ok, so basically it has the Range of 60ft and the Area of Cone because it's functioning as a Detect Magic spell. So if I'm scanning a room, I can pick out magic items. It then has the added benefit of allowing me to pick up and handle one of those item I just detected in order to get a +10 bonus to my Spellcraft check to identify it.
So 1st level worth of rounds to scan, and then every level worth of rounds after that to ID items.
Makes sense.

I don't intend to "identify" here, just to use it as a regular detect magic to... well, detect how many auras and stuff there is in the 60 ft shaped cone.
Identify seems to be interesting to use in a fight (yeah, I like to know if there's magic and what is magic when I fight), because you don't need to concentrate.
