Tetori Counter-Grapple

Rules Questions

Shadow Lodge

We had this come up last night in our game and I was curious if anyone had any thoughts to shed some light.

Level 5 Tetori Monk grapples a monster. On the monster's turn they try to reverse the grapple. Since at level 4 Tetori's can take attacks of opportunity even while grappling thanks to Graceful Grappler and they have the power Counter-Grapple, would the Tetori then be able to take an AoO on the monster trying to reverse the grapple before the monster makes their grapple roll?

If so is the Tetori able to make a grapple roll as their AoO to take the grapple into a pin thereby stopping the monster from ever managing to even attempt to reverse the grapple assuming the pin succeeds?

Ha, ha! A fellow Tetori! I should have known from how beautiful and handsome they were.

What a dumbdumb stupidface monster!

At 4th level, a tetori wrestler may make an attack of opportunity against a creature attempting to grapple him. This ability does not allow the tetori to make an attack of opportunity against a creature with the Greater Grapple feat. At 6th level, he may use counter-grapple even if his attacker has concealment or total concealment, at 8th level even if he is flat-footed, and at 10th level even if his attacker has exceptional reach.

This ability replaces slow fall.

Bruno interpretation--counter-grapple only apply on a monster's initial attempt to grapple Bruno, it does not apply to a CMB check during an ongoing grapple to reverse grapple and become controlling grappler.

That interpretation obviates rest of question, but Bruno continue down rabbit hole.

No. The AOO would be a normal attack. A Grapple is a standard action.

I can honestly say that this is one of the most amusing threads that I have seen in a while. Bruno gets extra XP for perfect role-playing and not breaking character and Holgan gets extra XP for energy and breaking into song!

As Bruno did eloquently put it, the attempt to reverse the grapple would not trigger an attack of opportunity as the two are already grappling and the monster is not initiating the grapple. I realize it does not spell it out that way per se in the rules, but the idea is that the initial grapple attempt is what draws the attack of opportunity, not the reverse. To quote the relevant section:

"If You Are Grappled: If you are grappled, you can attempt to break the grapple as a standard action by making a combat maneuver check (DC equal to your opponent's CMD; this does not provoke an attack of opportunity) or Escape Artist check (with a DC equal to your opponent's CMD). If you succeed, you break the grapple and can act normally. Alternatively, if you succeed, you can become the grappler, grappling the other creature (meaning that the other creature cannot freely release the grapple without making a combat maneuver check, while you can)."

So no attack of opportunity.

However, Bruno is right! Stupid monster to even try this (or so says my 6th level Half-Orc Tetori)!
