Smite Evil....who can it be used against.

Can Smite Evil be used against anyone with an 'E' in the alginment or just someone with an aura or subtype of 'EVIL'?

Anything with an "E" in the alignment. It does extra against outsiders with the evil subtype, evil dragons and undead.

Anyone with an Evil alignment. No Aura or Subtype required.

be warned there are non-evil people out there (like neutral clerics of evil gods) that detect as evil, but cannot be smited.

There are also evil people out there who don't detect as evil at all who can be smited.

Smite Evil can be used against anyone.

1: Your attacks will pierce the DR of anyone you use it against (including good creatures).
2:If they are evil, the paladin adds her Charisma bonus (if any) to her attack rolls and adds her paladin level to all damage rolls made against the target of her smite.
3: If they are an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses.

1 does not work against non-evil targets : "If the paladin targets a creature that is not evil, the smite is wasted with no effect."
