Mount and its rider - Mounted-Combat question

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

Hey there!
Couldn't finde anything in the rules and on search about this:

If you want to attack someone on a mount, can you do just do this?
I mean most of the time, the Rider is the bigger threat and you definatly want to get rid of him.

The Mounted-Combat feat can only be used, when my mount is attacked. So, what's the disadvantage of attacking the rider?

Otherwise I can just see the use of Mounted-Combat for AoO purpose and for feat chains.

Greetings!

Yes, attackers can choose whether to attack the mount or the rider without penalty to attacking either (for simply being mounted, other things may affect the attack).

The main reason a mount will be attacked is because they are weaker than the rider. Usually significantly so. Depending on the rider's combat style removing the mount (killing) may completely debilitate the rider. Whether it being a mounted lance charge finding himself on foot and out of luck, or the previously full-attacking archer finding himself on foot scurrying away from a raging barbarian. Mounts usually have lower AC and saves, and whiel the rider may negate one attack a round with Mounted Combat, focused fire will make your mount toast.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Getting a lancer off of his horse is usually a good idea. Getting an archer off of his griffin is always a great idea! Standard melee on standard mounts may seem like the better target... but, ranged or casters on flying mounts... take the mount out quickly and your odds improve a lot.
