Help me with a ranger.

Advice

Silver Crusade

So, long story short, son of a semi-noble family. Took care of there people, (town works etc.) Lived near the foot of the mountains on a river near a forest. There was a coup, parents were killed, he was shot with a poisoned arrow, fell into the river from his favorite spot and left for dead, was found and healed by an elderly ranger that new his family of unknown connections. trained him up ect ect.

now, he got older but hasn't attempted to bring retribution upon the tyrannical rulers that took his old life from him, but helps the people where and when he can. Gets word of a way to help him regain his land/people. yadda yadda the good stuff.

now the mechanical stuff.
I am thinking of 3 builds,
1. Switch Hitter, think Aragon,
2. Pure Ranger(archer)
3. Two-wep fighting.

25pt buy
I was thinking
for switch hitter/TWF
Str:18 (16+2)
Dex:14
Con:14
Int:12
Wis:14
Cha:8

Ranged
Str:14
Dex:18
Con:12
Int:14
Wis:14
Cha:8

Thoughts on the stats?

what feats would you recommend as priority to each?

Grand Lodge

You could easily drop your Wisdom to a 12 and get a headband of Wisdom to make the 14.

I typically favor the switch hitter and Archer types over 2 weapon. I just dislike not getting to use my feats for 2 weapon fighting when I move or during AoO.

If you go archer you can always go with a small race and using your Companion as a mount that can go about anywhere. Dire bats are just plain fun to shoot from.

Liberty's Edge

Well switch-hitter, follow the build advice in the Ranger guide.

I love the pure archer ranger, just because if I want to play melee, i'll play fighter/barb/paladin. So that makes me a bit biased. Although, with a 25 point buy you probably can go switch hitter. Use your ranger combat feats to make your archery better and all the rest of your feats to strengthen you in melee.

I'll have to find my plan for my archery ranger.

A switch Hitter Human Ranger

Str: 20 Dex: 14 Con: 14 Int: 10 Wis: 12 Cha: 7

Trait: Magical Knack and Reactionary

Feats:
H- Power attack
1- Quick Draw
CSF- Rapid shot
3- Deadly Aim
5- Boon Companion
CSF 2-Many Shot
7-Iron Will/Vital strike/ or teamwork feat with your pet. (Or anything you want really. This is a Free feat slot)
9-Critical Focus
CSF-Improved Precise Shot
11- Critical Chain Feat start here- Bleeding Critical

Grab your Composite with matching Str and Use a 18-20 critical ranged 2-handed Melee weapon. Deadly Aim is a little early but you can stick with it soon you can add it to your rapid shot. Till you get a higher to hit tho I would choose between Rapid or Deadly aim unless its your favored enemies.

I recommend a Good Animal Companion. I favor Giant Mantis, Crocodile, Roc, and a Big Cat. All have there Flavor and are Very solid Companions with extra abilities once they become Larger. Crocodiles get death roll which is similar to the Grab and rend from the Big cats but the Croc has the higher Grapple check....I also love the Idea(mental image) of a Noodle armed wizard trying to pry his way out of the mouth of a Gator who is death rolling. I like the Roc and Mantis cause they both Fly. The mantis has Climb, Fly, and land speeds, lunge, and sudden strike as well as a higher then normal Stealth/perception. Its all up to you really.

Lastly I recommend Using the Spell Gravity Bow and Lead Blades as one of your daily prepared 1st Level spells. Turns your weapons 1 size category bigger in damage. Your Bow and falchion becomes Great sword damage.

I also like Magical Knack as a trait. If you are going for min-maxing, then Gnoll Killer and Gnolls as your 1st favored enemy are where it's at, if you actually want to enjoy the character there are several traits you can pick up. Trap Finder lets you be a really good skill monkey.

As far as feats go, I pretty much would go the same route as Fruian up there. You wanna get the big damage feats (Power Attack/Deadly Aim) and Quickdraw as soon as possible. Skip Point Blank Shot because if they are within 30 ft, then they are within melee range, and just go for Precise as a bonus, as well as Rapid and Many Shot.

Boon Companion is 100% solid if you are going the Animal Companion route, and the animal companion is a strong asset, but it does require more research and RP'ing since you have to find said animal, and train said animal. Doing so requires you to max Handle Animal, which is a CHA based skill.

The Spirit Ranger has a nice alternative if you don't like book work, essentially giving you an extra spell slot(s) that you can use spontaneously which is a very nice substitute.

For stats, I would go:
16/15/14/10/14/8

With the +2 going into either DEX or STR depending on what level you start at and what you feel to be more important. You want that STR to be at 18, and you want DEX to make it to 16, so I would personally put my resources into a 16 DEX to start and a 17 STR to start, bumping up to 18 STR at lvl 4. The higher AC, Reflex, and Initiative are really more valuable at those earlier levels, if you even play through them.

Hunter's Howl is another very nice spell to have memorized, and picking up feats like Dodge and/or Favored Defense can really come in handy.

Also remember that Instant Enemy spell.

You can also Buy the animal as well. Once it becomes your Companion it then can progress like normal.
