Do all PFS character names have to be unique across the PFS universe? Maybe I am not understanding the difference between Character name and full name when you register a new character but when I put in my character name it says it is in use by another avatar. Now I dont intend to be posting in the forums with this name, I just want to use it for a character name.
So I guess what I am asking is if someone has a character name Joe, no one anywhere ever can not have a character named Joe? Seems counter intuitive to me.

Some of my players have had the same concern, but yeah, it happens. You can use it to help identify your character within the game. Rather than just Joe, you can have Just Joe or Joe the Just much like BNW mentioned.

Not that my characters have overly common names (most of them had their name before I added monkiers) but monkiers are fun to add more flavor to the name. Last names can help as well, especually if a character is supposed to be noble (I'm not sure my Brevoy noble swashbucker's name is long enough yet).
My character names are currently:
Lafethalyn Tahlsar -dead- (He's dead)
Andraste, Oracle of Sarenrae
Rinne, Priestess of Razmir
Talfryn (My Gun Tank/Empyreal Sorcerer/Eldritch Knight, he needs a monkier still, cept his name can no longer be changed anyway.)
Marcèl Lebeda (The Brevoy noble whose name needs to be longer.)

At a CON in season two, I had created a number of PCs (1st lvl) and was only playing some of them. A guy comes up wanting to play, so I fan out the unused PC sheets and say "try one of mine..." well - he liked my alchemist build that I had named Toaster. During the game, I gave him a blank Character sheet and said - "copy Toaster over to this sheet, and change his name and you can have a clone of my guy!"
About a month later, I pulled out Toaster and played him... but when I tried to register his name it was "already in use"...
I don't KNOW that the guy at the CON registered and grabbed my name.... but now my guy is "The Toaster - yes THE ...like The Captain!"
